Devils Deny Griffins in Deciding Set

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (9/28/2012) – Chestnut Hill College was taken to a fifth set for the second time this season, as the University of the Sciences defeated the Griffins in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match 3-2 (25-18, 25-21, 14-25, 23-25, 15-11). Freshman middle hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) headlined the Griffin effort with 15 kills on a .429 (15K-3E-28TA) hitting percentage and seven blocks.
 
The University of the Sciences (8-7, 3-2) put the pressure on Chestnut Hill College (6-10, 2-3) by winning the evening's first two sets, 25-18 and 25-21. The Griffins finally woke up in the third set, as Biro killed four balls and made two blocks to help post a 25-14 win. The lead changed twice in the fourth set and was tied five times; fortunately, the Griffins managed to force a deciding set with a narrow 25-23 win. The Devils led the whole way in the final frame, taking the match with a 15-11 final.
 
Four Devils recorded at least ten kills, as junior middle hitter Diana Solomon (East Islip, N.Y.), sophomore outside hitter Amanda DeAngelo (Vestal, N.Y.), and freshman middle hitter Caitlyn Crawford (Covington, Ohio) all totaled 12 kills. Freshman outside hitter Desirae Lair (Las Vegas, Nev.) added 11 kills. The fuel for the Devil offense was sophomore setter Kaileen Bevenour (Sicklerville, N.J.), who supplied 48 assists. She also provided 11 digs. Senior libero Stacey Wooden (Levittown, Pa.) led the Devil defense with 20 digs.
 
Biro was complimented at the front of the Griffin attack by junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa.), who totaled a team-high 16 kills on a .212 (16K-5E-52TA) hitting percentage. She also recorded 19 digs. Freshman setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) provided 44 assists as the director of the Griffin offense; she also contributed nine digs and four blocks to the Griffins strong defensive performance. The Griffins totaled 13 team blocks; Biro led the effort that also received strong showings from junior middle hitter Mary Markowski (Parkton, Md.), freshman libero Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.), and junior defensive specialist Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.). Markowski offered four blocks while also killing nine balls. Bianchini and Mattaliano both hustled to ten digs.
 
The women's volleyball team continues their CACC schedule at Caldwell College on Saturday, September 29, with a 1:00 p.m. match.
