Men’s Lacrosse Hails to Seton Hill In Annual Griffin Game

Box Score Greensburg, Pa. – (3/9/2013) – In what has been an annual meeting of Griffins; Seton Hill University defeated Chestnut Hill College 19-6 in today's men's lacrosse contest. Seton Hill University held heavy favor in their home opener, sticking Chestnut Hill College behind a 7-2 first-quarter lead and an 11-3 halftime deficit, before claiming a 16-7 win. On attack, senior Shane Morlock (Whitby, Ontario) and junior Michael Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) headlined the Chestnut Hill College half of the box score with two goals and an assist apiece.
 
Seton Hill University (3-1) secured the early advantage with an opening six-goal run. Junior attack Matt Delmonico (Port Moody, British Columbia) first set up junior attack Dylan Lefebrve (Regina, Saskatchewan) at 13:24 and just over six minutes later (7:18) the spread stood at 6-0. Senior attack Craig Owen (Glenolden, Pa.) found sophomore midfielder Christopher Mertens (Freeport, N.Y.) interrupted Seton Hill University with 5:15 remaining in the opening period, 6-1, but the battling Griffins would trade goals to leave Seton Hill University up 7-2 heading to the second quarter. Delmonico and Melnychenko exchanged scores at the start of the second, 8-3, but between then and 5:54 in the third quarter Seton Hill University would score six more times, 14-3. Chestnut Hill College outscored Seton Hill University the rest of the way, but even with Melnychenko and senior midfielder Nathaniel Tharp (Laytonsville, Md.) scoring at the end of the frame, 14-5, and Morlock depositing the last two goals of the game home team held on for a 16-7 victory.
 
Delmonico's five goals led Seton Hill University. He was supported by Lefebrve and senior attack Taylor Mansfield (Vestal, N.Y.) who each totaled five points. Lefebrve finished with three goals and two assists while Mansfield reach his total with two goals and three assists. Junior midfielder Jimmy Cogley (Peters Township, Pa.) controlled the face-off circle, 19-of-25 (76.0%), and hustled to a team-high six ground balls while senior goalkeeper Chris Ilse (Vestal, N.Y.) earned the win (3-1) with eight saves.
 
For Chestnut Hill College, freshmen, attack Tanner Fisher (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and Nicholas Thomas (South Ogden, Utah) each scored goals in addition to the contributions from Melnychenko, Morlock, and Tharp. Senior goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, Pa.) made 11 saves in the loss (2-2).

The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, March 12, when they host the College of Saint Rose in a 7:00 p.m. home opener. The contest will be played in the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Football Stadium.
