Skillman, N.J. – (6/4/2013) – With the 2012-2013 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's and Women's Tennis Division II Championships rightfully in the hands of Barry University and Armstong Atlantic State University, respectively, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its final national and regional rankings on May 29 (
MEN and
WOMEN). Enjoying the best seasons in program history, the Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis teams remained ranked 6
th and 4
th, respectively, while seven Griffins earned singles or doubles rankings among their regional rivals. After claiming the College's first NCAA Tournament win, 5-3 over Stonehill College on April 27, the Griffin women returned to the ITA's Top 50 Division II teams, tying Wingate University for the final spot in the women's national rankings.
The Chestnut Hill College men's tennis team (16-9, 5-1) broke new ground in 2012-2013, following in the footsteps of their female counterparts, with a NCAA Division II Championship Tournament appearance. Despite dropping a 5-1 East Regional decision at #3 Merrimack College, on April 28, the Griffins enjoyed the best season in program history with a 16-9 overall record and 5-1 standing in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). After sporting a 3-2 fall standing the Griffins were 13-7 over the remainder of the season and earned their highest CACC Championship Tournament seed ever with the league's second best conference regular season standing.
One of two All-CACC Second Team selections for the men's tennis team, sophomore
Michael Humes (Mount Laurel, N.J.) represented the Chestnut Hill College with a 18
th place singles ranking among his ITA East Region competitors. Humes finished the 2012-2013 season with a 17-8 singles record, going 15-9 in the number one flight. The Griffins top doubles team also remained in the regional rankings as junior
Yoann Pham (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) and sophomore
Steven Say (Cannes, France) garnered the 10
th place ranking among the ITA's East Region's best duos.
The Chestnut Hill College women tennis team (19-9, 6-2) surpassed the accomplishments of a remarkable 2011-2012 season with another accolade laden campaign in 2012-2013. Seniors,
Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia), were joined by junior
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) as the College's first three student-athletes to reach the 100-win milestone en route to the program's second straight National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Championship Tournament appearance. The Griffins run to the CACC Championship match landed them first such appearance as well as their first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Ranking on March 27; #50. As the NCAA DII East Region's #5 seed, the Griffins recorded the College's first NCAA DII postseason victory before exiting the East Region Preliminary Round a day later, on April 28, on an unfortunate 5-0 loss to top-seeded, #14 the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT).
Shcherbakova, Parapouras, and Dennis all earned regional singles and doubles rankings, while their doubles contributions placed the Griffins top two duos among the region's elite. Shcherbakova was an All-CACC First Team selection for the third time, posting a 16-10 individual mark while contributing to a 19-9 number one doubles standing with Parapouras. She ranked 8
th individually and 6
th when partnered with Dennis
Another three-time All-CACC selection, Dennis garnered the region's 13
th individual ranking as an All-CACC Second Team performer in 2012-2013. Dennis finished the 2012-2013 season at 15-9 overall and 12-7 at number two singles. When paired with sophomore
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.), Dennis also played a role on the ITA East Region's #7 doubles team; 10-6 at number two doubles.
With the Griffins best solo record, 22-4 overall, 21-3 at number three singles, Parapouras served as the ITA East Region's #19 individual. She was the first Griffins to reach the 100 career win mark, doing so with a 3-6, 7-5, and 10-5, number three singles victory over Florida Institute of Technology's (FIT) freshman Chloe Chanley (Louisville, Ky.) on February 23. She also earned her third straight selection to the All-CACC Team, this year earning a second consecutive Second Team honor.
