Griffin Determination Exhausts Eagles for CACC Win

2/15/2014 7:04:00 PM

Box Score Waterbury, Conn. - (2/15/2014) – Each team took a half, but neither led by more than seven points as Chestnut Hill College (8-15, 6-10) relinquished a 23-16 advantage before trailing 34-33 at halftime and 67-63 with four minutes (4:02) to play in a 72-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory. Graduate guard Taylor Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.) was the Griffins top performer; 19 points, five rebounds, and a steal, but a relentless rebounding effort from sophomore forward Carson Murphy (Mohawk, N.Y.) gave them every chance to eliminate the Eagles.

A one-two punch of Trevisan and senior guard Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, Pa.) got Chestnut Hill College (8-15, 6-10) out of the gate and with some contributions from junior forward Filip Sekulic (Danilovgrad, Montenegro) the Griffins owned a seven-point lead, 23-16, midway through the first half (9:25). But over the next three minutes (5:34), the Griffins traded baskets with Post University (9-14, 9-7), who eventually recovered for a one-point halftime lead, 34-33. In the second half, the Eagles used their narrow advantage to pace the Griffins for most of the frame. The Griffins finally got their first lead of the period, 63-61, with 5:50 still to play. Unfortunately, they would have to rally again as Murphy's exhausting effort earned him two critical free throws, 69-68 (1:57), and inspired the final Griffin revival. In the final minutes, a put-back from sophomore forward Noel Hightower (Easton, Pa.) returned the Griffins to the lead, 70-69 (1:00), and a pair of Bogans free throws would put them out of range in a 72-69 final.

Senior guard Stephen Perry Jr. (Westampton, N.J.) led four Eagles in double figures with 16 points. Senior forward Josh Tatum (Greenville, N.C.) was the best of the remaining three with 12 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal.

Efficient, Trevisan was 6-of-9 (.667) from the field 7-of-7 (1.000) from the free throw line in his team-leading effort. His free throw performance led a 18-of-22 (.818) team effort that out- weighed a the Griffins 2-of-11 (.182) long-range shooting performance. Bogans hit both of the Griffins three-point baskets (2-of-3, .667) in a 15 points effort, while Sekulic chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds, and a steal. Murphy offered eight points, nine rebounds, and an assist.

The men's basketball team concludes their home schedule on Tuesday, February 18, when they host Georgian Court University for their next CACC contest. Prior to the contest, the Chestnut Hill College Department of Athletics will recognize their graduating class in an annual Senior Day ceremony.
