Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. – (3/15/2014) – The softball team resumed their season today with a twin bill at Queens College. The Knight bats ended the first game early as sophomore second baseman
Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) recorded Chestnut Hill College's only two hits in an 8-0, six-inning final. The home team continued to hit in the second game, sweeping the doubleheader with 7-1 win.
Queens College (7-5) scored the first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back two-out singles, 1-0. They added to their lead in their next at-bat with a lead-off homerun, a misplayed bunt-single, and a double to left centerfield extending the lead to 3-0. Chestnut Hill College (0-8) looked to respond in their next chance at the plate, putting two runners in scoring position in the third inning. Unfortunately, consecutive strikeouts ended the Griffins best threat in an 8-0, six-inning loss.
The Knights scored three runs in their first at-bat of the second game to put the Griffins behind again, 3-0. The Griffins got one back in the top of the second inning, when freshman third baseman
Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) led off with single and eventually advanced to third base after a strikeout and a pair of walks to sophomore shortstop
Laura Eidam (South Salem, N.Y.) and sophomore catcher
Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.). Sophomore pitcher
Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) helped her own cause with a single to left field, 3-1, but that is all the production the Griffins would have in the inning and the game as the Knights extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the frame and 7-1 by game's end.
The softball team will resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Wednesday, March 19, when they host Wilmington University for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
