Box Score 4 Clermont, Fla. – (3/3/2014) – Chestnut Hill College remains winless after their first two days of competition at the Dot Richardson Spring Games as sophomore left fielder
Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) led the Griffins through losses against the University of Mary, 4-1, Dowling College, 7-3, Gannon University, 11-2 in five innings, and #20 Grand Valley State University, 11-1 in five innings. Carney was 3-for-8 with two runs-batted in while sophomore third baseman
Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) hit the season's first homerun in the loss to the Marauders.
The University of Mary (7-6) used a late outburst of power to overcome Soller's seventh-inning slam. After four scoreless innings, the Marauders took control of Chestnut Hill College's (0-4) season opener with four unanswered runs coming on a lead-off homerun and a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, 2-0, and three hits in the top of the sixth inning, 4-0. Soller cracked her first homerun of the season in the bottom of the seventh, but the solo shot would not be enough to sink the Marauders in a 4-1 final.
The Griffins went through three inning of scoreless softball with Dowling College (2-2) before a lead-off walk and two errors in the fourth inning resulted in two runs with a bases-loaded double to the right-center gap, 2-0. The Griffins claimed a 3-2 lead with a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning, but the Lions would plate five runs with two out in the sixth inning to settle the second contest at the Dot Richardson Spring Games on a 7-3 spread.
On the second day of competition the Griffins met Gannon University for some early-morning softball. Senior first baseman
Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, N.J.) doubled in a run in the third inning and sophomore right fielder
Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) singled in another Griffin run with a two-out single in the fourth inning, but a six-run Golden Knight first inning overshadowed the Griffin and helped end the contest early, 11-2.
The Griffins could only manage three hits off Grand Valley State University's sophomore pitcher Sara Andrasik (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) who allowed one Griffin run on three hits and a walk while striking out four runs. All three of the Griffins hits would come in the fifth inning, spoiling the Laker no-hitter and shutout with two one-out singles and a Carney two-out single to right field, plating the Griffins only run in the run-shortened affair, 11-1.
The softball team continues their play at the Dot Richardson Spring Games tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4, when the face the Florida Institute of Technology and Saint Anselm College at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
