Tennis Splits With Knights in Senior Day Twin Bill

Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/19/2014) – Chestnut Hill College split today's senior day doubleheader with Queens College as the Knights answered the Griffins 7-2 men's victory with an 8-1 win in the women's match. In their final regular season matches of the 2013-2014 season, the Griffins men swept doubles play and took the bottom four singles matches while sophomore Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) scored the only point for the Griffins women.
 
Following an opening Senior Day ceremony, the Chestnut Hill College (17-5) men grabbed an early advantage on Queens College (11-7) with a sweep of team play. At number one doubles, senior Yoann Pham (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) and junior Steven Say (Cannes, France) won the point 8-5. Freshmen Pedro Oranges (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Mariano Porter (Cuernavaca, Mexico) triumphed at number two doubles 8-1. Junior Michael Humes (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and senior Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) completed the shutout with an 8-0 win in the third team flight. Say, senior Anthony Moore (Williamstown, N.J.), sophomore Kevin Taylor (Burlington, N.J.), and senior Jeramy Solema (Briarwood, N.Y.) scored respective wins at number three singles (6-0, 6-10), number four singles (7-5, 6-1), number five singles (6-0, 6-2), and number six singles (6-0, 6-0).
 
The Griffins women were not as fortunate, as #48 Chestnut Hill College (17-9) dropped all three matches of a highly-competitive doubles round before squaring off as individuals. #32 Queens College (18-4) won the team matches 8-1, 8-5, and 11-8, respectively. Senior Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) provided the Griffins resistance in the second flight while junior Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) and sophomore Hayley Craskey (Aston, Pa.) were exhausted at number three doubles. Owens' triumph at number six singles was the Griffins lone highlight of individuals play as the she rallied from a 6-1 loss to win the flight 6-2, 6-1.
 
The Chestnut Hill College men's tennis team awaits competition in the upcoming CACC Championship Tournament, which will be hosted by the Griffins next Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27. The women prepare for seeding in the upcoming National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II (NCAADII) East Regional.
