Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/1/2014) – Chestnut Hill College earned a split in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with a five-run second inning providing enough insurance to defeat Goldey-Beacom College 5-4 in the second game. The Lightning were the victors in the opener, using a five-run fourth inning to earn a 7-1 win. Sophomore second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) recorded three hits (3-for-6), a run, and three runs-batted-in (RBI) while sophomore pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) helped her own cause a gritty second-inning at-bat in game two.

Dayter saw 15 pitches before drawing a two-out walk in the second inning of game two. The effort moved senior first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, Pa.) to second base and kindled the Chestnut Hill College (2-14, 2-6) bats for a five-run frame. The final pitch of Dayter's enduring at-bat found the backstop, advancing Cavallo to third base before a single from sophomore catcher Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) plated the first Griffin run, 1-0. Two hit batsman loaded the bases and brought another run in, 2-0, before another wild pitch and a Heaton singles accounting for the other three Griffin tallies, 5-0. Dayter held that lead without blemish until the fifth inning when Goldey-Beacom College (2-16, 1-10) chased her from the fray en route to a four-run frame, 5-4. Fortunately, after settling in freshman pitcher Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) struck out five of the last six batters she faced to save the Griffin victory (1). Cavallo recorded the 100th hit of her collegiate career with a second lead-off single in the fifth inning.

Sophomore third baseman Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) platted the Griffins only run of the opener, fulfilling a two-out rally with her single through the left side tying the affair at the end of the afternoon's opening frame, 1-1. Unfortunately, the Lightning struck for one run in the third inning and five in the fourth inning to take game one by a 7-1 final.

The softball team plays their next CACC doubleheader on Friday, April 4, with a 3:00 p.m. opening pitch at Holy Family University.
