Holloway Deals and Heaton Hits as Griffins Grab Two from Deacons

4/6/2014 7:58:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/6/2014) – First with some clutch pitching and then with some clutch running, Chestnut Hill College swept a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games from Bloomfield College, both 4-3, but the second game in nine innings. Freshman pitcher Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) saved the first win (3-6) and earned the second with six strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

In the bottom of the first, sophomore third baseman Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) singled in a hard-working freshman center fielder Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.), who reached on a bunt before stealing second and rounding third on Soller's smash through the right side, 1-0. Chestnut Hill College (5-15, 5-7) added three more runs in the second inning with a one-out beanball turning into more with a Bloomfield College (17-10, 9-5) error and a two-out double from sophomore second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) clearing the bases, 4-0. The Deacons closed the gap to 4-3 and threatened to steal the opener, but as a heads up play by Heaton helped Holloway (2) preserve the win for freshman pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) (2-5).

The second game came to the same final, 4-3, but in a different way. The Griffins were the first to score again, with a lead-off single from sophomore left fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) and a wild pitch and a Heaton single giving them another early lead, 1-0. Sharp led-off the Griffin third inning with her first collegiate homerun, 2-0, and after a double from senior first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, Pa.) and a single from sophomore catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) the Griffin lead was 3-0. Unfortunately, a bunch of Deacon singles and a walk evened the score in the top of the fourth, 3-3, before pitching held the contest four scoreless frames. With the tie-breaker rule in play, a sacrifice bunt advanced Kehr to third base in the ninth inning, but she only stayed for an out as she eventually scampered home for the winning run on another Deacon wild pitch, 4-3.

The softball team plays next on Wednesday, April 9, when they visit the University of the Sciences for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
