Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. - (9/12/2014) – Earning wins over Nyack College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-20), and Saint Anselm College, 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-20), Chestnut Hill College was undefeated in today's volleyball marathon. The Griffins opened the tri-match with a convincing Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win over the Warriors thanks to 11 kills apiece from sophomore outside hitter
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior middle hitter
Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) and a stalwart team defense. The Griffins offered more of the same in their second match, where the Hawks served as a much more competitive opponent in a four-set defeat.
Junior setter
Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) looked to McBride and Biro to get Chestnut Hill College (3-5, 1-1) out to a strong start against Nyack College (0-6, 0-1), 12-6. But after a timeout, the Warriors closed the gap with freshman setter Olivia Denny (Las Vegas, Nevada) directing the charge. They knotted the set at 12-12 and took a brief 13-12 advantage before the Griffins went back on the offensive with a pair of aces junior defensive specialist
Megan Chiovitti (Brighton, Colo.) sparking a 13-5 winning-run, 25-18. The second set played even closer, but a late service streak from Trabosh, Chiovitti, and junior defensive specialist
Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.) propelled the Griffins to a 25-14 win. The third set featured the closest score of the match and required the Griffins to rally from an early 5-1 deficit. With defense and Biro's consistent frontline production the Griffins tied the match at 8-8 before eventually establishing the five-point advantage, 18-13, that stood until the match's end, 25-20.
Tamsing totaled 28 assists, 22 of which were killed by McBride or Biro. Five aces from Bianchini led the Griffins 11-ace performance while sophomore libero
Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) and freshman defensive specialist
Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.) combined for 21 digs. The Griffins recorded four team blocks with Tamsing, senior right side
Kaitlin Schock (Allentown, Pa.), freshman middle hitter
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.), and freshman middle hitter
Melissa Shunk (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) each assisting on two denials.
At the outset of the second match, it appeared as though the Griffins had met their match in Saint Anselm College (3-2). The Hawks stole the opening set 25-17 and knotted the second set at 24-24 before the Griffins took control. Biro and McBride would provide the frame's winning kills off the feed of Tamsing, who directed the Griffin offense to wins of 25-16 and 25-20 in the final two sets of the evening. She finished with 37 assists, helping Biro and McBride to 16 kills and 14 kills, respectively. Bianchini added three more aces, while Trabosh's 24 digs and Gelfan's seven blocks headlined a defensive performance that totaled 82 digs and ten team blocks.
The women's volleyball team wastes no time getting back on the court as they travel to Mercy College tomorrow, Saturday, September 13, to challenge the Mavericks and Assumption College in respective 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. matches.
