Box Score Waterbury, Conn. - (10/10/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College sprint football team made sure it came back from its first road trip with a victory in tow – and did so in unforgettable fashion. The Griffins scored eight points in the final 1:44, ending up on the top side of a seesaw afternoon at Post University when freshman quarterback
Reginald Robinson Jr. (Germantown, Md.) hooked up with sophomore wide receiver
Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.) for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 32 seconds remaining, the last salvo in a 24-21 triumph that handed the Scarlet and Gold the inaugural Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Bowl.
PHOTO GALLERY Chestnut Hill College (2-1) set up the game-winning march with a crucial defensive stop at the most opportune time, turning potential heartbreak into elation in the blink of an eye. The Griffins were ready to take the lead on their previous drive, but Post University (0-4) poked the ball out of Robinson's hands on a scramble and recovered at their own 1-yard line, denying the visitors a go-ahead score. But the defense rose up, forcing a safety – its second of the day – that cut the Eagle edge to 21-18 with 1:44 remaining.
The Griffins took over at their own 45 and needed only three plays to matriculate down to the Post 23. The momentum stalled there, however, facing the visitors with a do-or-die 4
th-and-2. Robinson calmly found Hill for a 10-yard gain down to the 10, then connected with his go-to wideout two plays later with the winning touchdown. Consecutive sacks by freshmen
Brian Layden (Springfield, Pa.) and
Justuce Pitts (Philadelphia, Pa.) allowed the clock to run out on Chestnut Hill College's memorable road debut.
Chestnut Hill College controlled the early going, opening the scoring on a 28-yard hook-up between Robinson and rookie receiver
Raevon Floyd-Bennett (Union City, N.J.), whose first touchdown catch granted the Griffins a 7-0 lead with 8:23 to play in the first quarter. The visitors tacked on nine points to their ledger late in the frame. Sophomores
Joseph Arcelay (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) and
Josean Perez (Bethlehem, Pa.) combined to bring down Post junior quarterback Greg Volpe (North Haven, Conn.) in the end zone for a safety, 9-0, and freshman running back
Alexander Rivera III (Jamesburg, N.J.) rumbled in from seven yards out for his first career rushing score just 1:31 later, making it 16-0 Griffins with 12 ticks left in the frame.
The Eagles clawed back with a pair of eight-yard touchdown runs from freshman Malcolm Ware (Sutherlin, Va.), the second of which cut the gap to 16-14 midway through the second period (8:14). Post University finally overtook the Griffins when Volpe hit senior receiver Jay'Len Mahan (Waterbury, Conn.) from 65 yards out with 3:40 to play in the third, but Chestnut Hill College made all the plays down the stretch to leave with a thrilling conquest.
While Robinson and Hill stole the headlines late, it was freshman running back
Dasantae Callis (Folsom, Pa.) who kept the Griffin offense humming. The rookie carried 28 times for 167 yards (an average of 6.0 yards per tote), helping Chestnut Hill College ground up the Eagles to the tune of 271 yards rushing on the afternoon. Callis, who also had three receptions for 44 yards, was supported in the trenches by Robinson (15 carries, 56 yards) and Rivera III (16 rushes, 48 yards).
Robinson finished 12-of-30 for 169 yards with two touchdowns and an interception through the air. Hill hauled in six of those completions for 75 yards, while Bennett caught three balls for 50 yards.
Rivera was a force on the defensive side of the ball as well, matching Perez (2.5 tackles for loss), Layden, and Arcelay with a team-high eight tackles (three for loss); he also registered a sack and broke up a pass. Layden (two TFL) recorded a sack of his own, and Floyd-Bennett picked off his second interception. Sophomore
Scott Ashton (Melbourne, Australia) dropped three of his five punts, one of them a 50-yarder, inside the 20.
The sprint football team is next in action on Friday, October 23; the Griffins welcome Franklin-Pierce University to Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School Football Stadium for their home finale. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
