Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/15/2015) – Holy Family University continued to be a thorn in Chestnut Hill College's side tonight, raising its level of play for a three-set sweep (25-18, 26-24, 25-17) in a meaningful meeting of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) playoff contenders. The Tigers, who have never lost at home in the series and used a season sweep to keep the Griffins a game shy of the postseason a year ago, pulled to within a half-game of the Scarlet and Gold for the fourth and final South Division playoff spot.
Chestnut Hill College (6-16, 5-4) took an early 2-1 lead on a kill by sophomore middle hitter
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.), but host Holy Family University (6-15, 5-5) won the next four points to spark a 13-3 spurt that left the Griffins behind for good. The bulge grew as large as 11 (19-8) before Chestnut Hill College slowed the Tigers to a seven-point verdict (25-18).
The Griffins flipped the switch in the second set, roaring out to leads of 8-0 and 11-1, forcing a timeout from the home side. But after a kill by junior middle hitter
Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.) supplied a still-sizeable 15-6 margin, things went south for Chestnut Hill College. The Tigers used a 4-0 run to cut the discrepancy to five, where it remained until Gelfan powered down another kill to make it 21-16. Holy Family University took the next three rallies, but a pair of kills by senior outside hitter
Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) sandwiched around one by Tiger junior middle hitter Erin Miller (Chandler, Ariz.) restored a 23-20 advantage. That's when the Tigers struck.
Four consecutive Holy Family University kills faced the Griffins with a set point, which they saved on the arm of Koehler to level the affair at 24. Unfortunately, a kill and a service ace followed, granting the Tigers a 26-24 triumph in the pivotal second set. After an ace by junior outside hitter
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) closed the third-set gap to 7-5, Chestnut Hill College never got closer than three the rest of the way, and Holy Family University completed the sweep with a 25-17 tally.
Miller posted 11 kills without an error (11K-0E-18TA) for a .611 hitting percentage for the Tigers, while freshman middle hitter Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa.) recorded 13 kills and 11 digs. Freshman setter Natalie Stewart (York, Pa.) handed out 36 assists.
Biro (10 kills) and McBride (nine kills, one ace) registered 10.0 points each to lead the way for Chestnut Hill College. Freshman setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) distributed 29 assists and settled six digs.
The Griffins aim to snap a two-game skid on Saturday, October 17, when they welcome Dominican College (NY) to Sorgenti Arena for a 1:00 p.m. tilt.
