Ravens Spoil Sprint Football Home Finale

10/23/2015 9:45:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (10/23/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College sprint football team closed its home season this evening with a 45-7 setback at the hands of Franklin Pierce University. The Ravens returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and never looked back, gashing the Griffins for 291 yards on the ground on the way to a convincing victory.

The Griffins' seniors – Kevin Taylor (Burlington, N.J.), Cody Bloom (San Diego, Calif.), Terence Lorenzo (Rockaway Point, N.Y.), Nickolas Fratto (Island Heights, N.J.), Tomás Greer (Jamaica, N.Y.), Thomas Snider (Owings, Md.), James Graziano (Manahawkin, N.J.) and Dylan Hyland (Holmdel, N.J.) – were recognized for their contributions to the inaugural season as honorary captains for the pregame coin toss. Franklin Pierce University (3-3) took the air out of the Scarlet and Gold crowd right after, freshman Shannon Edwards (Spanaway, Wash.) taking the first boot 85 yards to the house for a lightning-quick 7-0 advantage just 14 seconds in (14:46). Chestnut Hill College (2-2) made matters worse soon after, coughing up the ball on its second play from scrimmage to set up a 38-yard field goal by sophomore Kyle Salucco (Exeter, N.H.) and a 10-0 Ravens lead at the 11:45 mark of the first quarter.

After fumbling again on the ensuing possession, the Griffin defense forced a Franklin Pierce University punt, but the Scarlet and Gold muffed a fair catch attempt, putting the visitors in business at the 7-yard line. Four plays later, senior quarterback Derek Reddy (Natick, Mass.) bulled his way into the end zone on 4th-and-goal from the 2, putting Chestnut Hill College in a 17-0 hole at 5:19 of the opening frame.

Reddy proved lethal with his legs again, dashing in for a 23-yard scamper and a 24-0 Franklin Pierce University lead with 11:54 to play in the second quarter.

The Griffin offense ignited the crowd with a spectacular broken play on their next drive. On third down from their own 41, the snap went over the head of freshman quarterback Reginald Robinson Jr. (Germantown, Md.), who raced back to recover the ball, dashed down the left sideline and dropped a long pass into the arms of sophomore wide receiver Domoree Hill (Bethlehem, Pa.) for a 45-yard gain. A roughing the passer penalty tacked on another 14 yards, and three plays later Robinson hooked up with freshman running back Alexander Rivera III (Jamesburg, N.J.) for a 12-yard touchdown strike, cutting the Raven lead to 24-7 at the 9:03 mark.

Chestnut Hill College consolidated the momentum on the next possession, when sophomore Josean Perez (Bethlehem, Pa.) stripped Reddy and Rivera pounced on the loose ball to negate a Franklin Pierce University scoring chance. The Griffins marched 71 yards on their next drive, but a short field goal attempt was blocked just before halftime.

Two three-and-outs, the second culminating in a Robinson fumble, awaited the Scarlet and Gold after intermission, and the Ravens converted the miscue into a short touchdown drive and a 31-7 lead at 8:29 of the third quarter. They tacked on a score on the first play of the fourth quarter and another on a 12-yard dash by Edwards that provided the final margin with 9:26 remaining.

Senior running back D.J. MacDonald (Mattapoisett) carried 25 times for 114 yards and two touchdowns for the Ravens, while Edwards (seven carries, 63 yards, TD), Reddy (10-57, 2 TD), and freshman Tyler Zech (Pepperell, Mass.) (10-56) all contributed to the ground attack.

Robinson threw for 57 yards and the touchdown for the Griffins while also rushing for 46 yards. Rivera added a 41-yard run to his first career touchdown catch and was a terror on defense, collecting 7.5 tackles (1.5 for loss) and a fumble recovery. Freshman Jonathan Baldwin (Charlotte, N.C.) racked up a game-high eight tackles (1.5 for loss), and classmate Brian Layden (Springfield, Pa.) finished with six stops.

Chestnut Hill College concludes its inaugural sprint football season on Friday, November 6, when the Griffins rematch Princeton University in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
