Women's Box Score | Men's Box Score | West Chester, Pa. - (9/15/2015) – Seeing their first action since competing in the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regionals, held at Philadelphia's Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center on September 19-21, the Chestnut Hill College men's tennis team joined the women for an afternoon dual match at West Chester University. The Griffins were victorious on both ends with the men scoring a 6-3 victory in their first dual match and the women remaining undefeated on the season with a 5-4 triumph.
A staple of the fall tennis schedules since the 2008-2009 campaign, the Griffins first competitive season as a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), the Golden Rams have gone six seasons since earning their only win over Chestnut Hill College in a 2009 women's match (L, 0-9 on 9/26/2009). Today's competition continued in the Griffins favor as men used a 3-0 doubles lead to edge out the Golden Rams, who split the singles decisions, and the women rallied from a 3-1 deficit with critical wins at number four (Owens, W, 7-5, 6-4), number three (Williams-Mulesa, W, 6-2, 6-4), and number two (Scholtze, W, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5) singles.
Sophomore teammates
Lucas Bocaletto (Itatiba, Brazil) and
Pedro Festugato Regalin (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) started the Chestnut Hill College (1-0) men off on the right foot with an 8-2 win at number two doubles. Succeeding 8-5 victories came on the respective shoulders of freshmen
Lucas Abe (Duderstadt, Germany) and senior
Henry Boyle (London, England), who won number three doubles, and freshman
Pierre Kohler (Les Sables d'Olonne, France) and sophomore
Jonathan Ducretot (Antibes, France) , who won number one doubles, to give the Griffins a 3-0 advantage.
The Griffins extended their lead in singles play, advancing to 6-0 with wins at number six (Ducretot, W, 6-0, 7-5), number two (Kohler, W, 6-3, 6-3), and number five (
Daniel Awad (Cartagena, Colombia), W, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4) singles. Unfortunately, the Golden Rams closed the match with wins at number one (7-6 (3), 6-4), number three (2-6, 6-4, 10-8), and number four (4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2)), singles to spoil the Griffins' shutout effort.
The women's match was more competitive as Chestnut Hill College (5-0, 3-0) remained perfect thanks to individual rallying wins from senior
Axé Owens (Trenton, N.J.), senior captain
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario), and sophomore
Lara Scholtze (Bod Homburg, Germany). Following an 8-0 Scholzte/Williams-Mulesa win at number two doubles, the Griffins lost the remaining two team matches; 8-3 at number three, and 8-4 at number one doubles. In fact, the Golden Rams increased their lead to 3-1 with an injury retirement win at number six singles before the Griffins responded. Junior
Laure-Anne Josso (Vannes, France) briefly narrowed the gap to 3-2 with her 6-0, 6-2, win at number one singles, but after a 7-5, 6-2, loss at number five singles, 4-2, the Griffins ended the match triumphantly with consecutive victories from Owens, Williams-Mulesa, and Scholtze, 5-4.
The men's tennis team plays their next fall match at Philadelphia University on Tuesday, October 13 (3:30 p.m.), while the women return to their CACC schedule on tomorrow, Saturday, October 10, with a 12:00 p.m. match at the University of the Sciences.
