Melbourne, Fla. – (2/24/2015) – Both the Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis teams earned wins today as a 5-4 final earned the Griffin women a victory over #37 University of Tampa and a 7-1 final brought the Griffin men a triumph just before the afternoon showers settled in at Star Island Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. The men's win over Capital University begins the count down to 100 career victories for Head Coach
Albert Stroble, who currently has 96 wins in his ninth season as the director of the program.
A sweep of doubles play gave Chestnut Hill College (4-3) a solid head start on Capital University (3-2), who only managed to scrape together an 8-4 win at number two singles before rain left the number six flight unfinished. Senior
Sammy Atri (Mexico City, Mexico) and junior
Kevin Taylor (Burlington, N.J.) combined for an 8-4 win in the top doubles match. Their effort was matched by junior
Henry Boyle (London, England) and senior
Devin Hampton (Midland, Texas), who were scored an 8-4 win at number two singles. But, freshman
Marco Gobbato (Yonkers, N.Y.) and freshman
Daniel Awad (Cartagena, Colombia) out did them both with an 8-3 third-flight triumph.
Singles play was rushed as skies darkened above. With most playing pro-sets, the Griffins were victorious at number one, three, four, and five singles thanks to the respective individual efforts of Boyle (8-4), Taylor (8-1), Hampton (6-2, 6-2), Awad (5-7, 6-2, 10-7). Their afternoon match at St. Leo University was postponed due to rain.
Chestnut Hill College (9-5) came from behind to defeat the University of Tampa (1-4), overcoming a 2-1 deficit with hard-fought wins at number one, two, four, and five singles. After respective Spartan wins of 8-3 and 8-2 in bottom two doubles flights, senior
Charlotte Dawson (Odessa, Texas) and sophomore
Laure-Anne Josso (Vannes, France) sparked the Griffins to victory with an important 8-6 win at number one doubles.
Following the dramatic win the Griffins went onto rally as individuals. Josso and Senior
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) both rallied to earn their individual victories. Josso came back from a 7-5 opening set loss to win the top singles flight with 6-3, 6-4 set-victories while Oechsle responded to a 6-2 opening-set loss with wins of 6-1, and 6-0. Dawson took number two singles 6-3, 6-3, while junior
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) secured the point at number four singles, 6-4, 6-2.
The men's and women's tennis teams travel together to St. Augustine, Florida, tomorrow, Wednesday, February 25, for a 2:00 p.m. dual match at Flagler University.
