Box Score Old Westbury, N.Y. - (3/18/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College men's lacrosse team's daunting early East Coast Conference (ECC) gauntlet continued this afternoon with a road trip to the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), the 3
rd-ranked team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II. Unable to break the Bears' defensive spell, the Griffins were held off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter in a 10-3 setback that kept them winless in seven all-time series meetings.
Challenging a third straight nationally ranked opponent, Chestnut Hill College (2-4, 0-2) found itself playing catch-up early as NYIT (5-1, 2-0) sophomore midfielder Will Kistinger (Bohemia, N.Y.) fired in a man-up rocket at 11:31, 1-0. Senior attack Luke Miller (Mastic, N.Y.) facilitated the next two Bears goals, the second of which came less than a minute into the second period (14:06), 3-0, to stretch the margin, and three more markers - all of them set up by Griffin penalties – over the final 6:21 of the frame separated the hosts for a 6-0 halftime gap.
One more goal late in the third quarter (0:49), 7-0, and another early in the fourth (13:27), 8-0, extended the deficit to eight before sophomore midfielder
Justin Albarran (Freehold, N.J.) put an end to the shutout, 8-1 (12:37). The teams alternated goals twice after that, with junior attack
George Markey (Branchburg, N.J.) scoring to make it 9-2 (11:33) and freshman midfielder
Joshua Pope (Schnecksville, Pa.) dialing up the first goal of his collegiate career, 10-3 (9:06). Miller and junior attack Shawn Murphy (Holbrook, N.Y.) then combined for a three-goal run as Murphy followed a goal by Miller with one of his own before teeing up Miller's second tally, 13-3 (4:55). Chestnut Hill College junior defenseman
Derick Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) halted NYTIT's progress with his second marker of the year, 13-4 (3:25), but Murphy put the finishing touches on his hat trick and the game, 14-4, with 1:00 to play.
Murphy also distributed three assists in addition to this three goals, giving him a six-point afternoon to match the one put up by Miller. The two-time ECC Player of the Year entered the week leading the nation in assists per game (3.8) and fourth in points per game (5.6) and did nothing to hurt his averages, finishing with two goals to complement four helpers. Kistinger joined the hat-trick party with one of his own to go along with eight ground balls, while sophomore attack George Schultz (Smithtown, N.Y.) posted a two-goal afternoon for the Bears, who enjoyed a 52-16 disparity in shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Seltzer (Plainview, N.Y.) logged nine saves to earn the victory (5-1).
Senior defenseman
Christopher Mertens (Freeport, N.Y.) had the only Chestnut Hill College assist, which came on the strike by Albarran. Sophomore goalkeeper
Thomas McDermott (Holmes, Pa.) withstood the NYIT shot barrage as best he could, recording a career-best 15 saves and three ground balls in defeat (2-4).
The tough sledding continues for Chestnut Hill College; next up is a date with #5 Long Island University (LIU) Post – the defending ECC champion – on Saturday, March 21, in Brookville, New York. Opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
