Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. - (3/19/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College baseball team opened Latshaw-McCarthy field with a bang today, as superb pitching paved the way for a doubleheader sweep of University of the Sciences (USciences) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play. Senior Dane Gahr (Brick, N.J.) and freshman Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) each allowed only two hits over six efficient innings for the Griffins, who continued their perfect league start with respective 6-2 and 4-0 victories.

Gahr spotted USciences a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning, but settled down to retire 10 straight batters, eventually giving his offense a chance to catch up. The Chestnut Hill College (7-2, 4-0) bats awakened in the bottom of the fifth, when the first five hitters reached base to spark a four-run outburst. Senior shortstop Preston Koehler (Bath, Pa.) started the frame with a single to center and came around to score the tying run on a triple by classmate Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.), 1-1. Sophomore centerfielder Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) gave the Griffins a 2-1 lead on a base knock to right field and freshman second baseman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) followed with a bunt single, setting the table for junior left fielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) to bring them both home with a two-run double over the head of Devils freshman left fielder Daniel Pineda (Wall, N.J.), 4-1.

Junior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) thwarted a Devils comeback in the top of the sixth, snaring a hard-hit ground ball down the line and getting up in time to throw out a runner at home. The home side then put up a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on DiBona's two-run single, 6-1, before USciences (0-9, 0-2) mounted a rally in their last at-bat. The Devils put their first three baserunners on against senior closer Vincent Manzella (Matawan, N.J.), pulling to within 6-2 with two men on. Manzella, however, retired the next three batters, punctuating the opening victory with a strikeout.

Steen produced an impressive all-around game, going 3-for-3 with a run-batted-in (RBI), a run scored, and two stolen bases, while Looby finished 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBI. DiBona contributed two hits while driving in three runs, and Koehler (2-for-3, two runs) and Craig (2-for-3, run) joined the multi-hit parade for Chestnut Hill College, which had 14 hits on the afternoon. Gahr (2-0) gave up just the one run in six frames, walking three and striking out three. Sophomore Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) worked the seventh and eighth innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.

The Griffins jumped right on top in game two, scoring two runs on a first-inning error by USciences, 2-0, and taking a 3-0 advantage on a run-scoring double off the bat of junior left fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) in the bottom of the third. That was more than enough for Sibson, who dazzled in his first collegiate start. The right-hander punched out four Devils against three walks over six effective innings, working out of a second-inning jam but otherwise cruising in earning his first win (1-0). The Griffins extended the spread to four in the eighth, loading the bases on a double, a hit by pitch, and a fielding error and bringing their fourth run across when Craig drew a two-out walk, 4-0. USciences put the tying run on against junior Robert Andris (Oreland, Pa.) in the ninth, packing the sacks with only one out. But Andris doused the fire, inducing a game-ending double play to complete the sweep.

Monaghan led Chestnut Hill College with two doubles in the nightcap, adding an RBI and a run scored, while Campion scored twice. Andris worked the final three frames to earn the save; he scattered four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Chestnut Hill College looks to extend its hot CACC start with a trip to Concordia College (NY); first pitch of the twin bill is slated for 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 23.
