Second Half Separates Rams From Griffins

Box Score Shepherdstown, W.V. - (3/22/2015) – What began as a competitive matchup eventually fell in the home team's favor as Chestnut Hill College lost ground on an 8-5 halftime deficit to leave Shepherd University defeated by a 20-9 final. It was a team effort that kept the Griffins in the mix early, but following the halftime intermission a refocused the flock rattled off seven straight scores before the 22-minute mark (22:18) and overwhelmed the Griffins to the final horn. Sophomore midfielders Rachel Perry (Gilbertsville, Pa.) and Samantha Herron (Cinnaminson, N.J.) each totaled three points for Chestnut Hill College while senior Alexis Puhl (Philadelphia, Pa.) captained the Griffins defensive effort with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.

The scoring came early and often. Shepherd University (4-2) recorded the first (1-0 at 27:48) and Chestnut Hill College (2-4) the second (1-1 at 27:00), they then traded two-goal runs to leave the score knotted a 3-3 with 23:20 still to play in the first half. But a timely four-goal run for the Rams separated the home team for a 7-3 advantage heading toward the later minutes of the first half. There, goals from freshman midfielder Julia Galantich (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) and freshman attack Hunter Leckonby (Charleston, S.C.) bookended on more Ram tally to leave the halftime spread at 8-5.   

The second half was a different story all together with a seven-goal streak extending the Shepherd University advantage to 15-5 and keeping the clock running on any potential Griffin retaliation. Perry and Herron attempted to deliver that comeback, contributing to four Griffin goals between 10:17 (15-6) and the five-minute mark (16-9, 4:59), but it the end it would not be enough to harness the Rams who conquered the Griffins by a 11-goal margin (20-9).

Their lead player was junior midfielder Erin Phelan (Thurmont, Md.) who deposited four goals while providing four assists, two ground balls, and two draw controls. Seven others recorded at least two points while junior goalkeeper Samantha Shores (Trappe, Md.) (4-2) totaled seven saves and six ground balls as the first of three Ram tenders to see time.

Perry matched her three goals with three caused turnovers and complimented the two-way performance with five ground ball recoveries. Herron hustled to two ground balls while Leckonby scored twice, grabbed two ground balls, and caused a turnover for Chestnut Hill College. Galantich and sophomore midfielder Jacklyn O'Leary (East Meadow, N.Y.) we responsible for the other scores while sophomore goalkeeper Katie Joe Lang (Manassas, Va.) made seven saves and secured seven ground balls in the loss (2-4). 

The women's lacrosse team completes their current streak of road games with their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener; a 4:00 p.m. opening draw is scheduled for Wednesday, March 22, at Wilmington University.
