Box Score 2 Caldwell, N.J. - (3/28/2015) – One big inning and another gem from red-hot junior pitcher
Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa.) gave the Chestnut Hill College baseball team just enough ammunition to leave Caldwell University with a sweep of a tightly contested Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) twin bill this afternoon. A four-run eighth inning lifted the Griffins to a 6-3 decision in game one, while Crim's second shutout in three starts resulted in a 2-0 triumph in the nightcap as they extended a promising start in league play.
Thanks to Crim, a fifth-inning RBI double by senior shortstop
Preston Koehler (Bath, Pa.) was all the offense Chestnut Hill College (12-5, 7-1) needed in a game two pitchers' duel. Junior left fielder
Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) singled with one out and circled the bases on Koehler's two-bagger, the only damage the Griffins could muster against senior Cougars hurler Eric Bomenblit (Allenwood, N.J.) (7.2 IP, 4H, 1R, 1BB, 10K). The Griffins did give Crim some extra cushion with a ninth-inning tally against a Caldwell University (2-13, 0-4) reliever, as DiBona was hit by a pitch with the bags full and two outs, 2-0.
That was more than enough for Crim (3-1), who finished off his second complete-game shutout in three starts with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth. Interestingly, Crim's final line (9 IP, 5H, 2BB, 7K) was identical to the one he turned in during a 4-0 victory over Nyack College on March 16. He set down the last 10 batters he faced, including one with the tying run on second in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Held down for the majority of the opener, the Griffins turned the tide with a four-run, eighth-inning outburst. Trailing 3-1 after a two-run single in the second inning and a solo home run by senior designated hitter Anthony Caruso (North Babylon, N.Y.) in the fourth, they loaded the bases with nobody out, chasing Caldwell University senior pitcher Robert Humes (Berlin, N.J.) after sophomore centerfielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) led off with a single and freshman second baseman
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, senior right fielder
Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) punched a two-run, game-tying single through the left side, 3-3. Junior catcher
Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) singled up the middle, bringing around junior left fielder
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) with the go-ahead run, 4-3. McLaughlin later came home on a wild pitch, 5-3.
Looby's RBI single made it 6-3 in favor of Chestnut Hill College heading to the bottom of the ninth, where the Cougars nearly came all the way back. A single and double got the frame started, and both runners would eventually score to set up a tense finish. With the tying run standing on second, senior closer
Vincent Manzella (Matawan, N.J.) retired Caldwell University's last hope on a fly ball to left for his second save.
Slagle posted a 3-for-4 afternoon for the Griffins, driving in two runs and adding a stolen base to the cause. Craig and DiBona logged matching 2-for-3 lines, with Craig scoring twice and DiBona once, while Looby swiped a pair of bags. Senior pitcher
Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) (2-1) worked eight strong innings on the mound, scattering six hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts, his third game with a double-digit punchout total.
The baseball team now returns home to Latshaw-McCarthy Field for a critical CACC showdown with Wilmington University, which is off to a 6-0 start in league play and riding a nine-game win streak. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1.
