Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. - (4/11/2015) – Trailing 4-0 in the opener of this afternoon's doubleheader against Briarcliffe College (NY), the Chestnut Hill College baseball team scripted a stirring turnaround, sending 12 men to the plate in an eight-run frame that laid the groundwork for an 11-4 triumph. Game two was not so prosperous, as the Bulldogs held down the Griffin attack and earned a split with a 7-1 verdict in game two. Junior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) swung a red-hot stick for Chestnut Hill College, recording six consecutive hits and finishing the twin bill 6-for-7 with a triple, three runs scored, and a run-batted-in (RBI).

Freshman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) threw up zeroes in the first three innings of his first collegiate start, but ran into a road-block in the top of the fourth, when Briarcliffe College (4-8) plated four runs on three hits, the last a two-run single off the bat of sophomore second baseman Steve Sessa (Woodbury, N.Y.), 4-0. Starting with a Campion single to left, Chestnut Hill College (19-8) produced its highest-scoring inning since an 11-run, sixth-inning outburst at Caldwell College in 2013. A single by senior center fielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) and a walk to senior shortstop Preston Koehler (Bath, Pa.) loaded the bags with one out, and the Griffins went station to station on a base hit by senior third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.), 4-1, and a base on balls by freshman Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.), 4-2. After a strikeout, the hosts scored six more runs on six consecutive hits, tying the contest on a two-run single by sophomore second baseman Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), 4-4, and taking the lead for good on a double by freshman right fielder Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.) that brought home two more runs, 6-4. Campion and McLaughlin each followed with their second hit of the frame to bring an eight-run explosion to a close.

The Griffins tacked on two in the fifth on a balk and an error, 10-4, and scored the last run on an RBI groundout by junior left fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.), 11-4. Craig went four innings (4IP, 3H, 4R, 4 BB, 4K) for his first win (1-0), and fellow rookie Joseph Basile (East Setauket, N.Y.) worked the last three innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five, for his first save. Campion finished the opener 4-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored, while Owens (2-for-2, two runs, RBI), Monaghan (2-for-3, RBI), and McLaughlin (2-for-3, run, RBI) all produced multi-hit efforts. Kelley, Campion, McLaughlin, Monaghan, Owens, and sophomore catcher Christopher Demey (Phoenixville, Pa.) all stole bases for Chestnut Hill College, which entered the weekend third in Division II in steals per game (3.44) and eighth in total swipes (86).

The Bulldogs started strong in game two, scoring in each of the first three innings against freshman Matthew Lyle (Baldwin, N.Y.) in his first start. Monaghan's sacrifice fly got the Griffins to within 2-1 in the first, but a throwing error surrendered a Briarcliffe College run in the third, 4-1. The visitors padded their advantage with a single run in the fifth, 5-1, and two more in the sixth, 7-1, to leave Latshaw-McCarthy Field with a split in hand and snap Chestnut Hill College's seven-game winning streak.

Campion smoked a double off the top of the wall in right-center field in the first inning, then ripped a single back up the middle in the third to cap a stretch of six straight at-bats with a hit. He struck leading off the sixth, but matched Steen with a 2-for-3 line.

The Griffins return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action with a twin bill at Dominican College (NY) tomorrow, April 12. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
