4/21/2015 10:10:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/21/2015) – A week removed from defeating Philadelphia University 12-8 in their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) meeting of the year the Griffin offense erupted once again as Chestnut Hill College slugged their way to an 18-2 win over the Rams. The Griffins made good use of 19 hits and 11 walks as the provided plenty of protection for senior pitcher Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) who held the rival Rams to one hit and two walks in the opening five frames.

After a silent first inning the Chestnut Hill College (24-9, 14-4) bats came alive with the help of some Philadelphia University (12-21, 5-13) errors in the second inning. Senior shortstop Preston Koehler (Bath, Pa.) led off the at-bat with a single to left and following a pop-out and after an error by the Ram first baseman and a misplayed single to left field from freshman right fielder Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.) the Griffins were on the scoreboard, 1-0. A ground out from freshman second baseman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) scored a second run, 2-0, and set the tone for the frames to come. The Griffins plated one run in both the third (3-0) and fourth (4-0) innings before putting up some crooked numbers in the fifth (6-0) and sixth (9-0) frames. The Rams finally answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, 9-2, but the floodgates opened in the seventh with the Griffins scoring six runs on six hits thanks to a lead-off triple from senior third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.), a run-scoring single from senior center fielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.), a two-out, two-run home run from junior left fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.), some heads-up base running, and a run-scoring Kelley double, 15-2.

Three more late runs made the final deficit 18-2 which made the day easy for Raia and the Griffin bullpen. Raia struck out six while stranding three Rams in his sixth win (6-1) of the season. Monaghan, Kelley, junior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.), and junior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) all had three hits; Campion extended three singles with five stolen bases while Slagle collected two bases on each of his hits.

The baseball team returns to Latshaw-McCarthy Field on Saturday, April 25, when they will honor their senior class between a pair of highly-important CACC contests with Post University. First pitch is scheduled for noon (12:00 p.m.).
