Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (4/7/2015) – Consolidating the momentum from last week's upset of 12
th-ranked Mercy College, the Chestnut Hill College men's lacrosse team developed a plan during its seven-day layoff and executed it to perfection tonight. The Griffins controlled from start to finish, rolling past visiting Dominican College, 11-2, for their second straight East Coast Conference (ECC) triumph. Junior attack
Michael Plaia (Hicksville, N.Y.) took just 80 seconds to find his scoring touch en route to a career-high five goals as the scarlet and gold racked up a season-best 47 shots.
Fellow junior attack
Tanner Fisher (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) hooked up with Plaia at 13:40 of the first quarter, 1-0, to open the floodgates for Chestnut Hill College (4-6, 2-4). Fisher scored a goal of his own, 2-0 (10:48), on an assist from senior midfielder
Christopher Mertens (Freeport, N.Y.) before Dominican College (1-8, 0-4) pulled one back a minute later, 2-1 (9:48). That's when the Griffins took flight, scoring the game's next six markers to go into cruise control. Freshman attack
Dylan Klusaritz (Slatington, Pa.) found the back of the net on a feed from classmate
Caleb Gaeng (Crofton, Md.) on the man advantage, 3-1 (7:05), and then connected with Plaia less than two minutes later, 4-1 (5:11). Sophomore attack
Justin Albarran (Freehold, N.J.) cashed in a pass by senior attack
Francisco Barone (Cape May Courthouse, N.J.), 5-1 (2:22), to cap the first-quarter flurry.
Sophomore
Alec Dambach (Howell, N.J.) picked up a loose ball and deposited it into the back of the net, 6-1 (1:39), and Plaia completed his hat-trick with a powerful series of dodges and a top-shelf rocket with 12 seconds left in the first half, 7-1 (0:12). Albarran netted his second tally to finish off a 6-0 run at the 10:47 mark of the third period, 8-1. The Chargers stopped the bleeding with a strike from sophomore attack Conor Reeves (Tappan, N.Y.), 8-2 (8:00), but that would be all the offense they could muster. Plaia sandwiched a pair of fourth-quarter goals around the first career marker from freshman midfielder
Gerard Lyle (Baldwin, N.Y.) to close the scoring, 11-2.
Reeves and freshman midfielder Christopher Augustin (Bellport, N.Y.) recorded the Dominican College goals, and sophomore Carlos Villaman (Montgomery, N.Y.) racked up 12 saves in relief of freshman goalkeeper Matthew Sandelier (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), who made four saves in the first quarter and was charged with the loss (0-3).
Plaia doubled his season goal total with his breakout performance, and Klusaritz garnered three points on a goal and two assists in addition to five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Dambach and Fisher each recorded a goal and an assist for the Griffins, who were 3-for-5 (60%) on the man-up.
Junior defenseman
Derick Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) spurred a stingy defense with four ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Griffins, who received stellar efforts from their goalie tandem. Sophomore
Thomas McDermott (Holmes, Pa.) made six saves (4-6) before giving way to rookie
Drew Lamela (Brick, N.J./ Montclair State University), who stoned eight shots without allowing a goal over the game's final 19 minutes.
The victory was Chestnut Hill College's fourth straight in the series, while the two goals allowed marked the Griffins' fewest since a 19-0 shutout of Penn State Abington in 2011.
The men's lacrosse team next heads to the nation's capital for a 5:00 p.m. ECC date with University of the District of Columbia on Friday, April 10.
