Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (1/18/2016) – In the first meeting of teacher and student Coach West's Griffins trailed Coach Shirley's Lady Rams by as many as 12 points, 43-31, near end of the third quarter (2:08). Chestnut Hill College used a 14-2 run to tie the contest at 45-45 with 7:25 remaining and a free throw by freshman guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) gave the Griffins a one point lead, 46-45 (6:58), but the momentum was not enough to secure victory in tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest as the Lady Rams controlled their possessions, leaving the Griffins little time to combat an eventual 59-52 defeat.
Chestnut Hill College (6-10, 4-5) came out of the gate trading baskets with Philadelphia University (13-5, 9-0), earning themselves a 15-12 lead heading to the second quarter. Behind junior guard
Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) and junior forward
Lauren Milligan (South Hampton, England), the Griffins carried the advantage until the latter end of the half as the Lady Rams took control at 2:25 mark, when a steal by senior guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa.) precipitated a fastbreak layup that put the visitors back ahead, 21-20. The sea change allowed the Lady Rams to separate for a 27-22 halftime lead, which they did not surrender until the final quarter of play.
The deficit grew to as many as 12 points, 41-29 (3:37), in the third quarter but settled at nine points, 43-34, for the break and dwindled to just three points, 43-40, after a three-point basket by junior guard
Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 8:50 to play. Another Griffin three-point basket from Kuhnen brought the Sorgenti Arena faithful to their feet and returned the home team to a narrow 46-45 advantage just past the seven-minute mark (6:58). Still, a minute later (6:03), led by Young, a confident Philadelphia University regained the lead, 47-46, and proceeded to draw out possession after possession until reestablishing a seven-point advantage, 55-48, with a minute to go (1:05). Free throws kept the Lady Rams ahead by the same margin at the final horn as they escaped the Scarlet and Gold in a 59-52 final.
The Lady Rams held a 44-37 rebounding advantage over the Griffins as senior forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa.) posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards. Along with nine rebounds, two assists, and five steals, Young paced the Philadelphia University offense with 19 points on a 6-of-12 (.500) shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 (1.000) effort from the foul line. Senior forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa.) contributed 16 points.
Kuhnen was one of the two Griffins in double digits as she led Chestnut Hill College with 14 points on 6-of-17 (.353) shooting. She also recorded four rebounds, two assists, and three blocks. Freshman forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Trossi offered all nine of her points in the second half. She also provided two assists and two steals. In a versatile performance, Milligan totaled seven points, seven rebounds, two assists, and four steals.
Chestnut Hill College will continue their CACC schedule at Bloomfield College, who they face in a 1:00 p.m. league contest on Saturday, January 23.
