Box Score Annapolis, Md. - (10/14/2016) – Visiting the United Stated Naval Academy (Navy) for their first Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) competition against the Midshipmen, Chestnut Hill College relied on the performances of freshman quarterback
Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.), freshman wide receiver
Lewis Roman (Randallstown, Md.), and a Scarlet and Gold defensive effort captained by sophomore nose guard
Brian Layden (Springfield, Pa.) in a 43-0 loss. Marino and Roman headlined a 178-yard Griffin passing attack, while Layden's two-sack effort stood out from the resistance.
Navy (4-1) scored on their first three drives with senior running back Brendon Clements (Miami, Fla.) rushing two touchdowns before a scoring pass from senior quarterback Nick Deterding (Lindsborg, Kan.) left the Midshipmen up 21-0 with 7:49 remaining in the first quarter. The deficit reached 36-0 by halftime with Navy adding to their advantage with a field goal, a 16-yard Deterding touchdown toss, and another scoring Clements run.
In the second half, Chestnut Hill College (2-2) slowed the Midshipmen to just seven points, while knocking on the door during an early fourth-quarter drive. Beginning the drive at their own 35-yard line, the Griffins used a heavy dose of freshman running back
Sef Penson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to progress the ball to the Navy 32-yard line. A couple plays later, Marino found Roman for a 30-yard reception to the Navy six-yard line, however, the Midshipmen defense only allowed a one-yard Penson rush before denying a pair of Marino passes and forcing the turnover on downs.
Marino was 11-of-34 (32.4%) with 178 yards through the air. Roman was his primary target with six receptions for 95 yards. Penson took a majority of the carries, but freshman running back
Jonathan Barber (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the Griffins' most efficient running back with 21 yards on just four carries (5.3 yards/carry). Layden moved the Midshipmen back 16 yards with his pair of sacks. He totaled six tackles in all, while freshman linebacker
Luke Daub (Easton, Pa.), sophomore linebacker
Jonathan Baldwin (Charlotte, N.C.), and junior safety
Kadeem Pankey (Easton, Pa.) each recorded seven tackles for Chestnut Hill College.
The Chestnut Hill College sprint football team returns to action on Friday, October 21, when they travel to the University of Pennsylvania for a 7:00 p.m. CSFL kickoff.
