Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/21/2016) – Chestnut Hill College senior middle hitter
Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.) recorded nine kills while hitting .471 (9K-1E-17TA) to lead a balanced Griffins attack in a 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-18), victory over Nyack College in Central Collegiate Athletic Conference (CACC) match at Sorgenti Arena this evening. Junior right side
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) and freshman
Reily Byxbee (Indianapolis, Ind.) each notched seven kills, with freshman middle hitter
Chase Cooksey (Herndon, Va.) netting four kills of her own.
The first set saw the two teams trade points early, with a kill by Nyack College (7-15, 4-7 CACC) sophomore outside hitter Larreya Hayden (Yorba Linda, Calif.) knotting the contest at seven apiece. Chestnut Hill College (9-11, 7-4 CACC) would answer on the serve of sophomore setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.), opening their advantage to seven, 19-12. The Scarlet and Gold were able to continue the pressure, coasting to the 25-14 first set victory.
The second set saw the Warriors and Griffins battle back-and-forth, with neither team gaining much of an advantage early. With the score knotted at 18-18, the Warriors would strike, going on a 4-0 run, sparked by the hot serving of Hayden. A kill by Nyack College junior outside hitter Jillian Smith (Oceanside, Calif.) gave the visitors a 24-22 edge and an opportunity to clinch the set but the Griffins responded, however, using a kill by sophomore outside hitter
Emma Mull (Jeannette, Pa.) and a block by Koehler giving the host the 25-24 lead and their own set-point. Chestnut Hill College would clinch the set on an attack error, putting the hosts up 2-0
The third set began much the same way the first two sets had, with the teams trading points early. With the score knotted at 7-7, the Griffins would take control, using a 7-0 run to blow the set open. The run was keyed by Sutton and Cooksey, with the duo combining for three kills and three assists during the run. The Warriors would cut the deficit down to five, 18-13, on Smith's serve, but the Griffins attack proved to be too much, with Koehler putting down her ninth winner of the evening to clinch the 25-18 win and 3-0 sweep.
Koehler, Byxbee, Gelfan and Cooksey combined for 27 of the team's 36 kills on the evening, while Sutton posted a match-best 24 assists to go along with three kills and eight digs. Senior libero
Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) led the way defensively with 16 digs for the Griffins.
Nyack College was led by Hayden's nine kills (9K-4E-27TA; .185) with junior outside hitter Abbey Lawson (Mililani, Hawaii) putting down eight winners of her own. Junior libero Kelsi Collins (Tarpon Springs, Fla.) led the way defensively with a match-best 20 digs.
Chestnut Hill College will continue CACC play on Saturday, October 22, when they travel to Georgian Court University. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
