Chestnut Hill College Rally Falls Short Against Mansfield University, 26-21

11/5/2016 4:29:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (11/5/2016) – The Chestnut Hill College sprint football team fell behind early but never gave up, battling back late, but Mansfield University was able to hold off the rally, topping the Griffins 26-21 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) finale for both squads at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Football Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The day began with a celebration for Chestnut Hill College's (2-5 CSFL) two seniors: cornerback David Dorsey (Philadelphia, Pa.) and punter Scott Ashton (Melbourne, Australia), who were recognized for helping establish Chestnut Hill College as a competitor in the CSFL.

Mansfield University (2-5 CSFL) won the coin toss, deferring the ball until the second half. With their opening drive, the Griffins marched the ball down the field, with a 24-yard pass by freshman quarterback Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) to sophomore wide receiver Raevon Floyd-Bennett (Union City, N.J.) setting the hosts up with a first and goal at the Mountaineers' eight yard line. Chestnut Hill College was able to get the ball down to the two yard line, but the defense stood strong, with senior defensive back Kyle Post (Sayre, Pa.) stuffing Floyd-Bennett three yards behind the line of scrimmage on fourth down to force a turnover.

Mansfield University, following back-to-back three-and-outs, finally struck gold on an 18-yard touchdown toss from sophomore quarterback Adam Hutchison (Watertown, N.Y) to senior wide receiver Kurt Logan (Chalfont, Pa.) with six seconds left in the opening quarter. The extra point was good and the visitors entered the second quarter with a 7-0 lead.

The Mountaineers wasted no time with their first possession in the second quarter, marching 45 yards in 2:01, to take a 13-0 lead. The scoring drive was highlighted by a 40-yard connection from Hutchison to Logan on a first down pass. The next Griffins possession ended in disaster, with Mansfield University senior linebacker Mike Bucek (Millersville, Pa.) recovering his strip-sack at the Chestnut Hill College 35-yard line to set the visitors up with great field position. Hutchison wasted no time, connecting on a 35-yard touchdown strike to freshman wide receiver D.J. McLean (Philadelphia, Pa.), with a made extra point putting the visitors up 20-0 with 10:49 remaining in the first half.

The Griffins would strike back on their next possession, marching 54 yards in four plays, capped by a 22-yard touchdown run by Floyd-Bennett to cut the deficit down to 13, 20-7. With momentum squarely on their side, the Griffins' defense stepped up with sophomore safety Kadeem Pankey (Easton, Pa.) picking off a 3rd-and-7 pass by Hutchison to give the ball right back to the Chestnut Hill College offense. The Griffins responded, going 54 yards in 3:44, capped by a 27-yard Marino TD pass to sophomore wide receiver Reginald Robinson Jr. (Germantown, Md.) trimming the deficit down to just six with 3:10 remaining in the half. Both offenses stalled out on their ensuing drives, sending the game into halftime with the Griffins trailing 20-14.

The Mountaineers opened the second half striking first, with McLean hauling in his second touchdown of the day, a 27-yard pass from Hutchison, to give the visitors a 26-14 lead and some breathing room. Both defenses would impose their will over the remainder of the quarter, and into the fourth quarter, with the upstart Griffins refusing to give up.

Starting their drive with 1:43 on the clock and down by 12, Chestnut Hill College began their drive, with an 8-yard rush by Marino on a 3rd-and-10 putting the hosts in a do-or-die situation with a 4th-and-2 from their own 47-yard line. Marino came out of the timeout with a mission, hitting Robinson Jr. with a 47-yard completion to set the Griffins up with a 1st-and-Goal from the six-yard line. On the next play Marino hit Pankey with a six-yard strike to cut the deficit down to just five, 26-21, with 1:11 remaining in the game. The Griffins went for the onside kick but wouldn't be successful, as the Mountaineers claimed the ball and took three knees to run out the clock and escape with the victory.

Marino led the passing attack, throwing for 177 yards on 11 completions with a pair of touchdowns and interceptions. Robinson Jr. hauled in four catches for 102 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore running back Jonathan Baldwin (Charlotte, N.C.) led the rushing attack with 57 yards on 11 rushes.

Hutchison led the passing attack, throwing for 239 yards on 18 completions (18C-30A) with three touchdowns and one interception. McLean grabbed five passes for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns, with the running back-by-committee accounting for 39 yards on 30 rushes.
