Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/17/2016) – Chestnut Hill College found themselves with a 34-27 lead as they headed to the locker rooms at halftime of tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. But their efforts were undone in the second half as they snuck out of the third quarter with a 47-45 advantage before scoring only seven fourth-quarter points in a 61-54 loss at Holy Family University. Freshman forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) scored a team-high 14 points, but it was the combined rebounding effort of junior forward
Lauren Milligan (South Hampton, England) and junior guard
Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) that kept Chestnut Hill College in the fray.
Junior guard
Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the early benefactor of Milligan and Kuhnen's rebounding as she recorded 12 points and four assists in the first half. The trio kept Chestnut Hill College (11-13, 9-8) competitive, anchoring a superior shooting (36.8%-33.3%), rebounding (25-19), and ball control (4-7 turnovers) performance that propelled them to a six point lead, 7-1, on an early (6:43) first-quarter McDonough three-pointer before spiriting a 10-0 late second-quarter run that landed the Griffins a seven-point halftime edge, 34-27.
Holy Family University (20-6, 15-2) crawled back into the contest over the course of the third quarter. The Griffin lead briefly reached nine points, 38-29, in the opening minutes (8:18), but the advantage quickly evaporated as a pair of Tiger free throws brought the spread even, 41-41, just before the two-minute mark (2:25). Wildgoose would not give up the lead without a fight, scoring the game's next two buckets with a block in between to reenergize the Griffins for a 6-4 run to the third-quarter break, 47-45. But that is where it fell apart for Chestnut Hill College, who relinquished the lead for good on a pair of Tiger free throws at the three-minute mark (3:00), 54-52. Following a McDonough miss, a Holy Family University layup pushed the game into free throw mode, where the Griffins continued to lose ground in a seven-point defeat, 61-54.
Senior guard Erin Fenningham (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Tigers with 18 points, but she was well supported by a double-double (11 points and 12 rebounds) from junior forward Abigail Iannotti (North Bennington, Vt.). Fenningham also recorded six rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Junior guard Jill Conroy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the third Tiger in double figures, adding five rebounds, four assists, and five steals to her 15 points.
Wildgoose added four rebounds, one assist, and a block to her offensive production. Milligan and Kuhnen combined for 15 points, 21 rebounds, two assists, and a block with Kuhnen holding the edge in scoring (nine points) while Milligan grabbed an extra board (11 rebounds). McDonough scored all 12 of her points in the first half. She also recorded a rebound, seven assists, a block, and two steals.
The women's basketball team returns to Sorgenti Arena for their final home game of the 2015-2016 season on Saturday, February 20, when they host Philadelphia University in a 1:00 p.m. CACC contest.
