2/20/2016 8:15:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (2/20/2016) – Chestnut Hill College opened the 2016 season on the right foot, trailing Seton Hill University by a single goal, 4-3, at the end of the first quarter. But the competition went sour in the next 15 minutes as a 5-1 second-quarter run sparked the visiting Griffins for an 18-6 victory. Senior attack George Markey (Branchburg, N.J.) and junior transfer Andrew Dooley (Monroe Township, N.J.) combined to score five of the Griffins' six scores with the other coming from freshman attack Casey Brown (Havre de Grace, Md.), who offered both a goal and an assist in his Scarlet and Gold debut.

Markey drew first blood, giving Chestnut Hill College (0-1) a 1-0 advantage less than two minutes (13:04) into the affair. But Seton Hill University (2-0) was not down long, evening the contest at 1-1 just a minute and a half later (11:36) and taking the lead, 2-1, on a shot from sophomore attack Hunter Hayes (Wading River, N.Y.) at 10:21. An unassisted Dooley tally at 4:46 evened the spread, 2-2, but another pair of Seton Hill University goals, one on a man-up opportunity, allowed the visitors to control a 4-3 advantage despite Markey's second score of the contest (0:14). Markey scored again in the second quarter (7-4 @ 7:24), but the effort would vanish in a 5-1 Seton Hill University slide that precipitated a 13-6 third-quarter deficit and an eventual 18-6 decision.

Six Seton Hill University representatives scored at least twice with four goals coming from junior attack Zack Rusch (Pittsburgh, Pa.). He also recorded an assist and a ground ball. Sophomore midfielder Jack Moran (Plainfield, Ill.) was his top supporter with two goals, four assists, three ground balls, and a caused turnover. In goal, sophomore Merritt Bailey (Canandaigua, N.Y.) played a majority of the minutes and earned the win (2-0) with nine saves.

Markey recorded three goals in all for the fourth hat trick of his career while Dooley added a ground ball to his two-goal performance. Junior defenseman Daniel DePasquale (Livingston, N.J.) anchored the Griffins defense with two ground balls and three caused turnovers while behind him, goalkeepers, junior Thomas McDermott (Holmes, Pa.) and sophomore Matthew Pedrick (New Milford, N.J.) split time. McDermott took the loss (0-1) and made five of the Griffins 11 saves.

The men's lacrosse team looks to redeem themselves on Tuesday, March 1, when they visit the University of Tampa for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
