2/9/2016 10:44:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/9/2016) – In a three-point shooting barrage for both sides, senior guard Ryan Griffin (West Friendship, Md.) served as the headline with a career-high seven three-pointers (7-of-9, .778) in an 86-78 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Wilmington University. Chestnut Hill College hit 14 three-pointers (14-of-27, .519) in all, their highest such total since hitting 15 (15-of-30, .500) in an 86-73 win over Philadelphia Biblical College (Cairn University) back on January 31, 2006. Griffin finished with a career-high 25 points and received plenty of help from his friends as sophomore guard Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) controlled the point position with 22 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.

Wilmington University (8-17, 3-13) appeared to have the upper hand on Chestnut Hill College (10-13, 7-8) as the Wildcats led by as many as 11 points, 36-25, with 5:23 to play in the first half. But the Griffins refused to go away as freshman forward Antonio Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.) knocked down a jumper before Isaac found Griffin for a back-to-back three pointers in a two-minute rally that cut the deficit to three points, 36-33, just after the four-minute mark (3:49). A series of Isaac free throws followed, forcing the Wildcats to answer on a tip-in by junior guard Drew Johnson (Lancaster, Pa.), a three pointer by senior guard Sam Sanders (Philadelphia, Pa.), and a layup by sophomore center Paul Medlin (Baltimore, Md.), that allowed them to take a 43-38 lead into the locker rooms.

Chestnut Hill College eventually tied the contest at 53-53 (11:32) after freshman forward Bryant Quill (Pottstown, Pa.) converted a three-point play that brought the Sorgenti Arena crowd to its feet. Isaac and Griffin again controlled Scarlet and Gold's offense over the next 10 minutes, but it was a lone three-pointer from sophomore forward Edward McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) at 2:27 that capped the 24-13 run and gave the home team their largest lead of the night, 77-66. Desperate to crawl back, the Wildcats pressured the Griffin offense, but the effort fell short on points and time as six clinching free throws by Isaac and Griffin sealed the deal in an 86-78 victory.

Five Wildcats finished in double figures with junior guard Tyaire Ponzo-Meek (Wilmington, Del.) pacing the visitors with 24 points on 7-of-15 (46.7%) shooting. He hit 5-of-8 (65.5%) from long range and hustled for five rebounds, an assist, and three steals. Medlin connected for 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to go along with two blocks. Sanders, junior guard Brian Adkins (Aberdeen, Md.), and Johnson finished with 14, 12, and 11 points, respectively.

In just his seventh appearance of his career, Griffin was unflappable, hitting 7-of-9 (.778) from beyond the arch and 4-of-4 (1.000) at the free throw line. Isaac appeared at charity stripe a career-high 18 times and connected 16 (16-of-18, 88.9%) of them to go along with three field goals (3-of-10, .300) in his third game of 20 points or more this season. The Griffins owned a 40-34 rebounding advantage as junior forward Gerald Evariste (Philadelphia, Pa.) hauled down a game-high eight boards while Quill and senior guard Noel Hightower (Easton, Pa.) both recorded seven.

The men's basketball team continues their home stand with a 3:00 p.m. CACC clash against Dominican College on Saturday, February 13.
