Box Score Miami Shores, Fla. – (3/2/2016) – For the second time in as many days, Chestnut Hill College met Barry University for a series of nine innings. Tonight's contest came down to the final at-bat as the Griffins' four-run top of the ninth was rendered futile by the Buccaneers' two runs in the bottom of the frame, 10-9. It is the second walk-off defeat in three games for the Griffins, who received three hits apiece from juniors, shortstop
Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) and right fielder
Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.).
It was certainly an offensive reboot as the opponents tied for 25 hits and 19 runs over the course of the nine frames. Chestnut Hill College (1-5) got the jump Barry University (11-6) with four runs in their first at-bat. Sophomore second baseman
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) and Baturgil led off the game with back-to-back beanballs and after a pair of wild pitches the score was 1-0, Griffins. A one-out infield single from senior designated hitter
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) made it 2-0 before a pair of two-out singles from senior catcher
Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and junior center fielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) pushed the advantage to 4-0. The Griffins added to the lead in the second inning with a one-out Baturgil single and a two-out Looby double down the left field line, 5-0, but the Buccaneers found themselves ahead in the later innings, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning, 5-4, and tying the contest with a third-inning solo shot, 5-5, before grabbing a one run lead on thanks to a one-out triple in the fifth inning, 6-5.
Barry University added some insurance tallies in the eighth inning, 8-5, and they would come in handy as a one-out single to right field from junior catcher
Christopher Demey (Phoenixville, Pa.) triggered the Griffins for four runs in the top of the ninth inning. Demey's hit was followed by consecutive walks to DiBona and freshman pinch hitter
Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.), and a run-scoring beanball to Craig, 8-6. An error on a Baturgil fielder's choice slimmed the deficit tied the ball game, 8-8, before a Monaghan single up the middle provided the possible game-winning run, 9-8. But a two-out double and a walk set the table for the Buccaneers in the bottom of the ninth inning. Back-to-back singles brought both runners around, abruptly ending the rematch on a 10-9 final.
Looby recorded two runs-batter-in (RBI) in his first multi-hit game of the season while Monaghan remained hot, improving his early-season batting average to .462 (12-for-26).
The Griffins regroup for a 3:00 p.m. contest tomorrow, Thursday, March 3, at the Florida Institute of Technology.
