Griffins Sweep Warriors with Pair of One-Run Wins

4/18/2016 11:37:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Pomona, N.Y. – (4/18/2016) – Back-to-back errors to lead off the 12th inning and set the table for Chestnut Hill College to survive 6-5 in the first game of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Provident Bank Park. The second game ended on a one-run deficit as well, 2-1. The Griffins won that one too, relying on the arms of sophomore Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.) and junior Justin Harnett (Aberdeen, N.J.) to put away Nyack College after a pair of early-inning ground-out, runs-batted-in (RBI) from sophomore designated hitter Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and junior right fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.).

Feeding off their recent unprecedented wins over Wilmington University, Chestnut Hill College (19-16, 10-4) looked to give Nyack College (12-19, 9-5) their best effort in today's twin bill. The Scarlet and Gold scored on their first at-bat, using a pair of lead-off walks to sophomore second baseman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) and senior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) to plate a run after a sacrifice and a single from senior left field Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.), 1-0. But the Warriors got the run back with some aggressive second-inning base running, 1-1, and grabbed a 3-1 advantage with a pair of sacrifice flies in the third inning. Craig and Campion struck again in the fourth inning, each knocking in a run to even the spread at 3-3. From there, the Warriors took the lead with a fifth-inning solo shot, 4-3, and a sixth-inning one-out single, 5-3. With their backs against the wall the Griffins came through in the top of the ninth inning; junior center fielder Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) led off with a double and following a pop out to second base, Campion connected for his sixth home run of the season, 5-5. Freshman pitcher Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) kept the Warriors silent in the bottom of the ninth and through three frames of extra innings, allowing a 12th-inning RBI-single from Monaghan to end the affair in the Griffins' favor, 6-5.

Craig led off the second game with a free base as he got plunked for the sixth time this season. He promptly stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from freshman third baseman Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.), before scoring on Owens' grounder to second base, 1-0. The Warriors echoed the run in the bottom of the frame, 1-1, but in the second inning the Griffins scored again. This time, using a one-out single from freshman catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) put the wheels in motion. The base-hit was followed by a Szumigala walk, a Warrior error, and Monaghan's run-scoring grounder to second base, 2-1. That was all the offense the Griffins would need to beat the Warriors in the nightcap as Kelley and Harnett combined to hold the Nyack College to one run one five hits and two walks. Kelley struck out five in six innings to earn his fifth win (5-2) of the year while Harnett collected his second save of the season with three innings of scoreless relief. Looby was 2-for-4 in the contest with his fifth-inning single tying current Assistant Coach Jesse Daywalt '12 for the program's all-time lead in hits (172).

The Griffins hope to remain hot tomorrow, Tuesday, April 19, when they visit #14 East Stroudsburg University for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
