Chestnut Hill College Falls to Holy Family University, 3-2

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (9/21/2016) – Chestnut Hill College senior libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) notched 27 digs to lead the Griffins on the night, but Holy Family University won two of the last three sets to escape Sorgenti Arena with a 3-2 (25-14, 21-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-7) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory on Wednesday night.
 
Holy Family University (6-6, 3-0 CACC) started the first set quickly, with back-to-back kills from sophomore middle hitter Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa.) putting the visitors up 13-7. The Tigers would able to extend their advantage nine, 18-9, before coasting the 25-14 victory in the first set.
 
Chestnut Hill College (4-8, 2-2 CACC) was able to overcome a slow start in the second set, taking a 12-9 lead following a block from senior outside hitter Emily Kohler (Bath, Pa.) and freshman outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Indianapolis, Ind.). Holy Family University surged back, taking a 19-16 edge following a 10-4 run. The hosts were able to battle back however, closing the set on a 9-2 run, keyed by a pair of kills by junior right side Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) to knot the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 victory.
 
The Griffins raced out to a 23-9 edge in the third set and hold off a late rally to escape with a 25-20 victory and a 2-1 lead. The Griffins netted nine winners in the set while the Tigers hits .024 percent (10K-9E-42TA).
 
The fourth set saw Holy Family University jump out to the big lead early, holding a 19-10 lead following a kill by Wassel. The Griffins clawed back into the match, with a Gelfan kill cutting the deficit to eight, 23-15, but the Tigers were able to do just enough to take the set 25-18 and send the game into a decisive fifth frame.
 
Continuing the momentum from their fourth set victory, Holy Family University ripped off 11 of the first 15 points to hold a commanding 11-4 edge. The Griffins were able to trim the lead down to six at one point, but the visitors proved too strong, taking the fifth set and the match by a score of 3-2.
 
Koehler led the Griffins' attack, scoring nine kills and a .269 hitting percentage (9K-2E-26TA), to go along with one solo and three block assists. Trabosh paced the squad with 27 digs while also notching an ace, with sophomore setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) dishing out a team-best 28 assists.
 
Wassel was dominant throughout the night, scoring 30 kills and 22 digs in the victory. Sophomore setter Candyce Riley handed out a match-high 53 assists with four players notching over 15 digs.
 
Chestnut Hill College will continue CACC play on Saturday, September 24, when they travel to Caldwell University. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
