Tumasz Leads Griffins’ Long Range Game In 93-80 Win at Mercy College

Box Score Valhalla, N.Y. - (11/25/2017) – The Scarlet and Gold got off to an early lead at Mercy College, using three point daggers from senior guard Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) and sophomores, guard Cailey Gibson (Marlton, N.J.) and forward Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) to build an 18-8 edge. Chestnut Hill College extended their lead to as many as 18 points, 42-24, midway (5:20) through the second quarter and held a 14-point, 49-35, halftime advantage before decisively putting the Mavericks away in a 93-80 final. Tumasz, Gibson, and Glenn were among five Griffins who scored in double figures; the foremost hit seven (7-of-8, .875) three point baskets in a game-high 27-point performance.
 
Tumasz's opening long range shot (3-0 @ 9:35) got the ball rolling for the Chestnut Hill College (3-2) perimeter game, which sparked the Scarlet and Gold for an 18-8 lead in the opening five minutes (5:14). The Griffins' early advantage reached as many as 15 points, 27-12, on a fastbreak connection from Gibson to junior forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) late in the quarter (1:06). A concluding Maverick rally rested Chestnut Hill College's first-quarter spread at 11 points, 29-18.
 
Another Tumasz three pointer advanced the Griffin lead to 18 points, 42-24, midway through the second quarter (5:20). The pinnacle pushed Chestnut Hill College to a 49-35 halftime perch that endure the Mavericks' third quarter recovery, 56-50 (5:52). The Scarlet and Gold fended off the home rally with their signature three point barrage, freshman guard Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) joined Tumasz in the refortification that reached double digits, 62-52, at 4:39 and crested at 72-60 (1:28), before reaching a 93-80 end.
 
Freshman forward Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J.) led four Mavericks in double figures with her 17 points. She hit three (3-of-5, .600) of Mercy College's 10 (10-of-28, 35.7%) three points baskets and also recorded four rebounds. Senior forward Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y.) was one of the quartet, she scored 14 points in addition to six rebounds and two steals. So were freshman guard Anna Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y.) (12 points) and junior forward Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y.) (11), who combined for 23 of the Mavericks 43 bench points. Sophomore forward Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn.) was a factor as well with nine points, 14 rebounds, two assists, and a block.

Tumasz matched a career-high with her 27 points and did so efficiently, hitting 9-of-12 (.750) from the field, 7-of-8 (.875) from three point range, and 2-of-2 (1.000) at the free throw line in the process. She also recorded three rebounds, a block, and five steals. Gibson and Wildgoose both finished with 17 points; the former added four rebounds, five assists, and two steals while reestablishing her career-high scoring total for the second time in the last three games, and the latter also recorded three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Glenn offered her first career double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) while Sebold provided a dozen (12) of the Griffins' 14 bench points. Junior guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) finished with seven points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.
 
The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball returns to action on Tuesday, November 28, when they host Bloomsburg University in a 6:00 p.m. home opener.
