Chestnut Hill College Falls Short in Final Seconds Versus Bloomsburg University, 58-53

Jaeda Wildgoose
Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (11/28/2017) – A collaborative 33-point effort from junior forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) and sophomore forward Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) was not enough to defeat Bloomsburg University as the Huskies stole the home opener from the Griffins in the final second on a 58-53 final. Glenn led the Griffins in scoring with 17 points, but Wildgoose was the Griffins' top performer with her fourth double-double (16 points, 13 rebounds) of the season.

Wildgoose's dirty work in the paint gave Chestnut Hill College (3-3) the early momentum, but it was a Glenn three-pointer that gave the Griffins a 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. But Bloomsburg University (3-4) did not lie down, outscoring the Scarlet and Gold 22-13 in the second quarter for a narrow 26-24 halftime edge. The Husky bench was the difference, scoring 18 of their 26 first half points; freshman forward Darcy Lee (Altoona, Pa.) provided nine of them while seven more came along with six rebounds from freshman forward Lauren Oeth (Doylestown, Pa.).

The close battle resumed in the second half of play, where plays in the paint became a crucial strategy for both teams. But with 35 seconds (0:35) remaining in the third quarter, a successful three-pointer from freshman guard Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) returned Chestnut Hill College to their largest lead of the affair, seven points (45-38). Despite the late Husky three the Griffins still owned a 45-41 third quarter edge. Chestnut Hill College and Bloomsburg University matched each other's intensity in the fourth quarter, where the winner was unclear until the closing seconds. Tied at 45-45 with six minutes (6:00) remaining, the teams exchanged baskets for several minutes until Wildgoose knotted the contest at 51-51 just before the three minute mark (3:06). Unfortunately, freshman guard Payton Spadaccino (Ivyland, Pa.) came up big in those final three minutes, hitting the go ahead free throw, 52-51, at 2:30 and found sophomore forward Meghan Corridoni (Exter, Pa.) for a buffer bucket at 2:04, 54-51. The three-point edge was enough to endure the Griffins' final push as junior guard Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) sealed the contest from the free throw line, 58-53.

Sophomore guard Leah Myers (York, Pa.) headlined Bloomsburg University with an all-around performance consisting of 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Lee scored a team-high 16-points while Oeth accumulated nine points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Wildgoose finished the affair with 16 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, four blocks, and a steal in her double-double performance. Meanwhile, Glenn hit three, three point baskets (3-of-7, .429) in her third straight double digit scoring effort. She also recorded five rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Junior guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) added seven points, a rebound, four assists, and three steals, while Sebold scored all five of the Griffins' bench points.

The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball returns to Sorgenti Arena on Saturday, December 2, when the open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Goldey-Beacom College.
