Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (12/9/2017) – Chestnut Hill College's 48-28 rebounding edge more than made up for a 26-11 turnover deficit as the Scarlet and Gold earned their second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win of the season over #19 the University of the Sciences (USciences), 72-65. Sophomore forward
Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the highest of three Griffins in double figures, matching her season-high (20 points) while recording her second double-double year with 11 rebounds. Another was junior forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.), who recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Thanks to the first-half play of freshman guard
Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) and Wildgoose, Chestnut Hill College (5-4, 2-1) paced USciences (7-1, 2-1) most of the way to a 31-28 halftime spread. But in the second half, Glenn took over, scoring 16 of her 20 points in en route to the Griffins' seven-point victory. The Devils opened the contest with a 6-0 run, that gradually vanished behind the Scarlet and Gold's concerted effort on the glass. With three minutes (3:06) remaining in the first quarter, the game tied at 9-9 on a Sebold three. Glenn made the go-ahead jumper at 2:23, 11-9, that gave the Griffins the lead until early in the second quarter. There, USciences briefly captured a 14-13 (9:50) lead before a three from senior guard
Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) (16-14, 9:27) and a pair of free throws from Wildgoose (18-16, 8:09) helped Chestnut Hill College separate for a 31-28 halftime edge.
The contest remained tight throughout the third quarter as the Griffins were only able to extend their lead by a single point, 46-42. Early in the fourth quarter, the Devils took advantage of a series of Chestnut Hill College turnovers to regain the lead, 47-46 (8:51). But the Griffins eventually settled in and regained control of the affair for good on a layup from junior guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) just after the five-minute mark (4:55). Soon after, a Trossi jumper (55-51, 3:25) and a Glenn three pointer (58-54, 2:41) ensured the Scarlet and Gold's triumphant parade to the free throw line.
Senior guard Sarah Abbonizio (West Chester, Pa.) led USciences with 26 points and two assists. She was joined in double figures by junior guard Alex Thomas (Hockessin, Del.) and sophomore guard Jordan Vitelli (Warrington, Pa.) who each both gathered five rebounds while recording 18 and 11 points, respectively.
Glenn hit a season-high four, three point baskets (4-of-10, .400) in her second 20-point performance of the season. She also hit both her free throws (2-of-2, 1.000) and provided an assist. Wildgoose also hit all her free throws (7-of-7, 1.000) while recording three assists and a pair of blocks. Trossi was the third Griffin in double figures, finishing with 11 points in excess of four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard
Cailey Gibson (Marlton, N.J.) was a major contributor as well with nine points, nine rebounds, and a team-high five assists.
The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team briefly breaks from their CACC schedule for a pair of non-conference contests; the first is scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, December 10, when the Griffins visit The Lincoln University for a 3:00 p.m. tipoff.
