Chestnut Hill College Sharp in Opener, 3-1, but Goldey-Beacom College Comeback, 6-5, Splits CACC Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Wilmington, Del. – (3/23/2017) – Despite the early-spring chill, a sunny afternoon provided Chestnut Hill College the opportunity to open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a twinbill at Goldey-Beacom College. The Griffins and Lightning split the doubleheader as seniors, center fielder Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.) and senior Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) led the Scarlet and Gold to a 3-1 victory before Goldey-Beacom College rallied for a 6-5 win in the nightcap.

Sophomore third baseman Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) went 4-for-4 in the second game - and totaled five hits (5-for-8) in all - while senior shortstop Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif.) knocked in two runs with a first-inning double. Chestnut Hill College (2-10, 1-1) scored three runs in the first inning of game two and led the second game, 5-4, after Sharp knocked in freshman pinch runner Kailey Reposa (Factoryville, Pa.) in the top of the fifth inning. But a pair of defensive miscues in the bottom of the frame allowed Goldey-Beacom College (2-9, 1-1) to strike back for a 6-5 league win and complete the doubleheader split.

In the opener, the Griffins stood on a three-run first inning thanks Holloway, who worked her way in and out of trouble over the course of the contest. Winn led of the Scarlet and Gold's first at-bat of the afternoon with a single to left side of the Goldey-Beacom College defense. She advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from junior second baseman Jaden Perrillo (Shickshinny, Pa.) and eventually scored on an error by the Lightning third baseman, 1-0. A wild pitch moved sophomore right fielder Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) – who reached on a one-out walk – to third base; she and Apodaca scored on Sharp's two-out single, 3-0. Holloway (1-5) took care of the rest, earning her first win of the season in complete game fashion. She held the Lightning to one run on seven hits and five walks while striking out seven.

Chestnut Hill College takes a brief break from their CACC schedule tomorrow, Friday, March 24, to host Millersville University in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
