Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (3/29/2017) – Victory Field #1 served as the setting for today's pivotal East Coast Conference (ECC) as Chestnut Hill College hosted #12 Mercy College in an early afternoon league contest. The Griffins recovered from a 7-5 third-quarter deficit to force overtime with unassisted scores from seniors attacks
Alec Dambach (Howell, N.J.) and
Tanner Fisher (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia). But the extra frame only lasted 19 seconds (3:41) as freshman midfielder Anthony DeVito (Rocky Point, N.Y.) converted the period's only shot and ended the contest in the Mavericks' favor, 8-7.
Freshman midfielder
Carson Rees (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) tallied the first goal of the affair with a backhanded strike off the feed from senior midfielder
Justin Albarran (Freehold, N.J.) at 13:33 of the opening quarter, 1-0. Mercy College (7-2, 3-0) responded a little more than four minutes later (1-1 at 9:30) and scored again at 5:34 to take a 2-1 advantage to the second quarter. There, Chestnut Hill College (3-3, 2-1) greeted the Mavericks with two early goals as Dambach and fellow attack, junior
Dylan Klusaritz (Slatington, Pa.) respectively score unassisted goals at 12:50 (2-2) and 12:27 (3-2). The Griffins held the lead for about a minute and a half with the Mavericks knotting the contest, 3-3, on an unassisted goal from sophomore attack Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y.) at 10:59. But, the Scarlet and Gold eventually owned a narrow 5-4 halftime advantage thanks to a last-minute (0:22) flick from Fisher.
Unfortunately, the Mavericks scored all three third-quarter goals to harness a 7-5 lead heading to the final quarter. There, Dambach (7-6 at 7:48) and Fisher (7-7 at 4:49) played hero, forcing overtime with a pair of unassisted strikes; the latter after a well-timed check by junior midfielder
Joshua Pope (Schnecksville, Pa.).
Chillianis led Mercy College with four goals and a pair of ground balls. DeVito, senior attack Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Ryan McSpadyen (Toronto, Canada), and senior midfielder Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y.) were responsible for the other four Maverick goals. Wilcox also provided three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Freshman midfielder Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y) won 8-of-13 (.615) face-off while sophomore Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y.) (7-2) recorded 11 saves and three ground balls.
Fisher added a ground ball to his three-goal effort, while Dambach added a pair of clutch caused turnovers to his two tallies. He got plenty of help turning the Mavericks over as the Griffins caused 13 turnovers in all; senior defenseman
Daniel DePasquale (Livingston, N.J.) was chief among the contributors with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. In goal, senior
Thomas McDermott (Ridley, Pa.) (3-3) totaled 10 saves, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Chestnut Hill College continues their ECC schedule on Saturday, April 1, with a 3:00 p.m. contest at the University of the District of Columbia.
