Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/30/2017) – The visiting Mercy College collected a combined 44 hits over two games to sweep today's doubleheader softball matchup with Chestnut Hill College. The visitors took game one by a 12-3 score before capturing the nightcap with a 20-3 victory.
Mercy College (9-3) jumped on the board early in game one, with lead-off batter – junior second baseman Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif.) – ripping a homer to right-center field in the top of the first inning. Chestnut Hill College (3-15) would answer back in the home half of the inning, with sophomore catcher
Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.) ripping an RBI single to second base, driving in sophomore right fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.).
The Griffins would take the lead in the third inning, with Magee being the catalyst. Drawing a two-out walk, Magee was driven home by senior shortstop
Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif.) on an RBI double to right center field. Following a walk and a single, the bases were loaded for senior center fielder
Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.), who drew a walk to drive in Apodaca, giving the hosts the 3-1 lead.
The lead would be short-lived, however, with the Mavericks tallying eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to blow open a tightly contested matchup. Opening the inning with a single, freshman pitcher Kendall Meeks (Guysville, Ohio) advanced to second on a grounder to short, and scored on an RBI bunt from senior first baseman Katiana Golino (Carteret, N.J.). Following another out, the Mavericks struck, scoring seven runs with two outs, highlighted by a three-RBI double from junior third baseman Cassidy Wooten (Ardsley, N.Y.).
Following a scoreless fifth, the Mavericks would strike again, with Wooten launching a one-out two-run homer to give the game its 12-3 final. Meeks (1-1) was able to shut the door in the bottom half of the frame to secure the six-inning victory. Apodaca, Riotte, and Sharp led the Griffins with an RBI apiece in the loss.
Game two saw the Mavericks strike early and often, racing out to a 12-0 lead before coasting to the 20-3 victory. Leemus and Meeks led the way offensively for the visitors, with Leemus going 3-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored, and Meeks going 2-for-2 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored in the victory.
Chestnut Hill College was able to tack on three runs in the home-half of the second inning, keyed by heads-up base running from freshman utility
Cailey Stevenson (Burbank, Calif.), who scored from third on a throw-down to second in an attempt to catch the runner stealing. With the bases juiced, the Griffins saw two more runs walked in to make the score 12-3 following two innings of play.
That would prove to be all the offense the Griffins could muster, as the Mavericks used a hot-hitting offense and solid defense to outscore the Scarlet and Gold 8-0 the remainder of the game to leave with a 20-3 victory. Freshman pitcher Alexis Carmichael (Allen, Texas) picked up the win (2-1), while Chestnut Hill College sophomore
Hunter Irvin (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) struck out a pair in the loss (1-5).
The Chestnut Hill College softball team will resume Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on April 1, when they visit Nyack College. Opening pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
