Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/5/2017) – Chestnut Hill College sophomore right fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) provided two homers, five runs batted in (RBI) and three runs scored to lead the Chestnut Hill College softball team to a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader sweep of Holy Family University this afternoon. The Griffins walked-off in game one with a 2-1 victory before staging a late rally to secure an 8-7 win in the nightcap.
Game one saw two pitchers duel until the very end, with neither giving an inch. Holy Family University (12-10, 6-2 CACC) opened the first inning with a bang when junior shortstop Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J.) launched a two-out solo homerun to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Magee would answer right back for Chestnut Hill College (6-16, 4-4 CACC) launching a lead-off solo blast of her own to knot the contest at one apiece through one inning.
Both pitchers found their groove after the opening stanza, with Holy Family University junior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif.) and Chestnut Hill College senior
Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) keeping the game scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. The Griffins opened the inning with a triple from senior first baseman
Jenna Long (North Wildwood, N.J.). Freshman
Cailey Stevenson (Burbank, Calif.) came on as a pinch runner, standing just 60 feet from home plate representing the winning score. Magee stepped into the batter's box and delivered in an unconventional way. With Magee sending a foul ball sky-high on the first base side, Stevenson was able to race down the base path, scoring following the out to secure the 2-1 walk-off victory for the hosts.
Orozco went 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five in the loss (8-5). Holloway was even more dominant, going 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on a pair of hits while striking out six in the victory (4-7).
Game two was quite the opposite from game one, with both teams finding their stride offensively. Magee opened the scoring for the Griffins when senior center fielder
Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.) was hit with a two-out, bases-loaded pitch to send Magee across home plate.
The Tigers would respond in the top of the second, however, scoring three runs to secure a 3-1 lead. Junior second baseman Jen Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo.) opened the frame with a one-out double to center field. She was driven in on the very next play, with sophomore catcher Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash.) sending a single deep enough for Trapp to score. After advancing to second on the throw home, Nolan was driven in when freshman third baseman Rachel Zeides (Woodbine, N.J.) knocked a to center field. The Tigers would tack on more run in the inning to clinch a 3-1 lead.
The visitors would add more insurance in the top of the fourth, with senior pitcher Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif.) helping her cause with a one-out, three run homer for a 6-1 advantage. The Scarlet and Gold wouldn't back down, notching a four of runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to one, 6-5. Scoring one run in the top of the fifth and holding the Griffins scoreless in the frame, the Tigers looked to be cruising to victory, holding a 7-5 edge with just six outs remaining, but the Griffins wouldn't be denied.
The bottom of the sixth is when the Griffins struck, with junior second baseman
Jaden Perrillo (Shickshinny, Pa.) hitting a lead-off double. That was followed by a double from Long down the left field line, scoring Perrillo and cutting the deficit to one, 7-6. Magee would once again be the hero, taking an 0-1 pitch - in the very next at-bat - and sending it to straight-away center field, for an 8-7 lead. That's all the offense the Griffins would need, as Holloway returned to secure the victory with a one-out save (1).
Favinger led the Tigers in game two, going 4-for-4 with one run scored. Nolan was 3-for-4 (.750) with one run scored and an RBI. Walters (3-1) went 5.0 innings in the loss, allowing eight runs while striking out six.
Chestnut Hill College sophomore
Jessica Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) (1-0) went 2.1 innings in the victory, allowing just two hits before giving way to Holloway for the save. Magee was 1-for-2 (.500) with three runs scored and three RBI in the victory. Sophomore third baseman
Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) added two hits and three RBI in the win.
The Chestnut Hill College softball team resumes play tomorrow, April 6, when they travel to Pace University for a non-conference doubleheader. Opening pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
