Chestnut Hill College Records 9-7 ECC Victory Over Roberts Wesleyan College

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (4/8/2017) – Chestnut Hill College played its third of four home games, and first in the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Football Stadium today, April 8, as they hosted Roberts Wesleyan College in a midafternoon East Coast Conference (ECC) contest. The Griffins took a 2-0 first-quarter lead, but broke for halftime stalemated at 3-3 with the Redhawks. After intermission, an initial Roberts Wesleyan College tally gave the visitors the lead, 4-3, but the Scarlet and Gold closed the frame with three late third-quarter goals, 6-4, that were followed by an evenly played fourth quarter in a 9-7 final. Fellow countrymen, senior attack Tanner Fisher (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) and freshman attack Carson Rees (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) led the Griffins with four points apiece; the former recorded his on a goal and three assists, while the latter netted a career and season-high, four goals.
 
Rees scored the first Chestnut Hill College (5-3, 4-1) goal, unassisted at 14:01 of the first quarter, 1-0. The Griffins second score came just 1:14 later (12:47), when senior attack Alec Dambach (Howell, N.J.) located Fisher for his tally, 2-0. Roberts Wesleyan College (4-6, 1-3) managed to settle in after that, holding the Scarlet and Gold scoreless for the remainder of the opening frame and taking a 3-2 lead in the second quarter with goals at 12:09 (2-1), 7:13 (2-2), and 4:41 (3-2). Fortunately, Rees took advantage of a late Redhawk penalty, completing a feed from Fisher at 1:18 to send the game to halftime on a 3-3 tie.
 
After the break, Roberts Wesleyan College assumed the lead thanks to a connection between freshman midfielder A.J. Hemms (Palmyra, N.Y.) and sophomore attack Cody Menzies (Georgetown, Ontario) at 12:52, 4-3. Late in the third quarter, Chestnut Hill College regained their composure as goals from senior midfielder Justin Albarran (Freehold, N.J.) at 3:11 (4-4), Dambach at 1:59 (5-4), and Rees on the man-up at 1:07, separated the Scarlet and Gold for a 6-4 lead heading to the final frame. There, an unassisted goal from senior midfielder Andrew Dooley (Monroe Township, N.J.) at 14:21 pushed the Griffins advantage to 7-4, before a late Redhawk threat reduced it to a single goal, 8-7, for the final 2:36. For Chestnut Hill College, the insurance came late as Rees scored his fourth tally of the affair with just 25 seconds (0:25) remaining on the clock, 9-7.
 
Hemms and Menzies both finished with two goals and an assist to lead Roberts Wesleyan College. In support, sophomore attack Brady Martin (Ottawa, Ontario) offered two assists and caused two turnovers, while junior midfielder John Wellington (Orchard Park, N.Y.) recovered two ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Keith Keehn (Penfield, N.Y.) (4-6) made six saves and collect four ground balls.
 
Fisher added five ground balls to his four-point afternoon. Rees recovered two. As did Dambach and Albarran, who along with Fisher and Rees account for the Griffins multipoint performers. Senior Daniel DePasquale (Livingston, N.J.) (1 ground ball, 3 caused turnovers) and sophomore midfielder Matthew Anderson (Yardley, Pa.) (2 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers) headlined the defense in front of senior goalkeeper Thomas McDermott (Ridley, Pa.) while possession control specialist Blake Turner (Tampa, Florida) won 13-of-17 (.765) face-offs. McDermott (5-3) made six of the Griffins' seven saves and recovered a ground ball.
 
Chestnut Hill College takes a brief break from ECC play to visit Georgian Court University for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday, April 11.
