Third Quarter Miscues Malign Griffins at Millersville University

Jaeda Wildgoose
Box Score Millersville, Pa. – (11/14/2018) – Chestnut Hill College placed five players in double figures but was unable to break into the win column tonight at Millersville University as the Marauders forced the Griffins into 21 second half turnovers to rally for a 71-61 win. The Scarlet and Gold was led by a pair of double-doubles from senior forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) and freshman center Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.) – the first of her collegiate career –  as well as the continued strong play of freshman guard Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.); 15 points, three rebounds, three assists, and a block.

Chestnut Hill College (0-3) held a slight 32-28 halftime edge thanks to an early second quarter run. The 9-2 stretch earned the Griffins a 24-20 advantage and enough leeway to sustain their lead over Millersville University (1-2) to intermission. Unfortunately, the Scarlet and Gold's third quarter difficulties erased all their first-half good will. The Marauders outshot the Griffins 52.4% - 41.7% in the period and scored 13 points on a dozen (12) Chestnut Hill College turnovers; it allowed the home team to recover with an 11-0 run that tied the score at 41-41 (3:48) and afforded them a 44-41 lead with just over three minutes (3:19) remaining in the frame. Millersville University parlayed the three-point edge into an eight-point, 53-45, lead by the end of third quarter and extended their lead to as many as 13 points, 62-49 (5:28), midway through the fourth quarter. Led by Crim and sophomore guard Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.), Chestnut Hill College mustered one last run at the Marauders. The Griffin run cut the deficit to just five points, 64-59, in the final minute (0:57) of play, but Millersville University's closing free throws were enough to keep the Scarlet and Gold at bay in a 71-61 finish.

Sophomore guard Lauren Lister (Blandon, Pa.) led Millersville University with 22 points, three rebounds, five assists, a block, and four steals. She was complimented by senior forward Kendra Bamberger (Blandon, Pa.) and junior guard Courtney Dimoff (Red Lion, Pa.), who both recorded a dozen (12) points; the former paired her points with 11 rebounds, two assists, a block, and two steals, while the latter additionally offered six rebounds and two assists.

Wildgoose added an assist and two blocks to her 13-point, 14-rebound double-double, while Miller added an assist to her 10 points and 11 rebounds. Crim hit four (4-of-7, .571) three point baskets en route to her 15 points. Sebold and junior forward Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) joined Wildgoose, Miller, and Crim in double figures. Sebold finished with 11 points, a rebound, two assists, and a steal. Glenn offered 10 points, four rebounds, and a steal.

Chestnut Hill College continues their early-season, non-conference schedule tomorrow, Thursday, November 15, when they host the University of New Haven in a 6:00 p.m. home opener.
