Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/24/2018) – Chestnut Hill College put an exclamation point on the most successful season in program history with six players recording double figures in an 80-77 Central Collegiate Atlantic Conference (CACC) over South Division leader, the University of the Sciences (Usciences). Junior forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) captained the Griffins with 23 points, but she had plenty of help from the perimeter with senior guard
Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) and sophomore guard
Cailey Gibson (Marlton, N.J.) hitting three, three-pointers apiece and an impressive 23-of-29 (.793) team effort at the free throw line keeping the Griffins one step ahead of the Devils.
Chestnut Hill College (19-9, 15-4) consistently kept a comfortable distance from USciences (25-3, 17-2) throughout the first half. In the first quarter, both teams exchanged baskets until an and-one from junior guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) at 2:40 (19-13) gave the Griffins the separation they needed to gain a 21-15 edge by initial break. The Scarlet and Gold held the advantage for the duration of the second quarter, where Gibson three pointers pushed their lead to double digits, 33-22, at 5:40 and a dozen (12) points, 46-34, by halftime.
USciences approached the third period with a vengeance, cutting a 19-point, 56-37 (6:59), deficit to just four points, 61-57 (0:02). Chestnut Hill College sustained their advantage by filtering the start of the fourth quarter through Wildgoose. She strengthened the Griffin position to seven points, 64-57 (9:43), after a successful Wildgoose and-one, but USciences closed the gap again, bringing the spread to a single point, 71-70, just before the five-minute mark (5:09). Fortunately, Chestnut Hill College regained focus and hit the necessary free throws to ward off the Devils.
Off the bench, freshman guard Irsa Ye (Lansdale, Pa.) led USciences with 18 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Three other Devils joined her in doubles figures; senior guard Sarah Abbonizio (west Chester, Pa.) scored 16 points in excess of six rebounds and three assists, junior guard Alex Thomas (Hockessin, Del.) offered 12 points in addition to five rebounds and two assists, and freshman guard Jess Huber (Lansdale, Pa.) provided 10 points while grabbing a rebound.
In addition to her 23 points, Wildgoose recorded six rebounds, two assists and one steal. She was supported by 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal from classmate guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.). Tumasz logged a 13 points, six rebounds, and one assist, while Gibson, sophomore guard
Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman guard
Cassie Seabold (Willow Grove) all gave a 10-point performances.
The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team finishes the 2017-2018 regular season at 19-9 overall and 15-4 in the CACC, earning the South Division's #3 seed in the upcoming CACC Championship Tournament. Postseason play begins with a 7:00 p.m. Opening Round contest at Caldwell University on Tuesday, February 27.
