Chestnut Hill College Clinches CACC Playoff Spot With 73-67 Win Over Georgian Court University

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/7/2018) – Chestnut Hill College battled their way to the top tonight, clinching their spot in the upcoming Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament with tonight's 73-67 win over South Division rival, Georgian Court University. Junior forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) led the Scarlet and Gold with 17 points, but freshman guard Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) hit the clutch free throws that sealed the deal in the closing seconds (71-67, 0:10).

 

The second time around versus Georgian Court University (4-18, 2-13) was no easier than the first for Chestnut Hill College (15-8, 11-3), who created a 12-point, 22-10 (0:30), cushion for the first-quarter break. Although the Lions started to gain confidence and matched the Scarlet and Gold point-for-point in the second quarter they remained down by a dozen (12) points, 38-26, at intermission.
 
The second half was a much a different story, as the Lions awoke for a 26-18 third-quarter discrepancy. The frame started off with the Griffins growing their advantage to 15 points, 41-26, (8:27) on the Wildgoose's post play. Unfortunately, senior guard Jaelyn Tweedy (Richmond, Va.) and her pride reduced the Chestnut Hill College lead to two points, 49-47, by 2:46 and later eclipsed the Griffins, 63-62 (5:18, 4QTR), before a series of fastbreak points and a timely steal from sophomore forward Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) precipitated the insurance free throws in a 73-67 final.
 
Tweedy led GCU with a double-double performance of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Additionally, she recorded four assists, two blocks, and two steals. Senior guard Jess Placher (Cape Coral, Fla.) followed with 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Junior forward Destiny Thompson (Bridgeton, N.J.) chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds, while junior forward Alba Herrero-Gomez (Terrassa, Spain) added 10 points.
 
Chestnut Hill College was captained by 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals from Wildgoose. Seabold followed with 14 points, three rebounds, and three steals, while junior guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) logged 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Additionally, forward Tomiaya Graham (Miami, Fla.) recorded 10 points.
 
During halftime, 114 Chestnut Hill College student-athletes were recognized for earning Athletics Academic Honor Roll recognition for the spring 2017 and fall 2017 semesters. The honors included 15 student-athletes that earned a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) and was highlighted by the men's (3.78) and women's tennis (3.64) teams, who respectively offered the College's top team GPA's for the fall 2017 semester. Overall, the Griffins earned a 3.23 GPA for the term.
 
The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, February 10, when they host Caldwell University in a 1:00 p.m. Senior Day affair.
