Chestnut Hill College Extinguishes Firebirds in 19-13 Victory

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (3/27/2018) – Battling against the rain and the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Chestnut Hill College overcame both in a 19-13 victory. Nine Griffins scored in the success, but freshman midfielder J.R. Howell (East Meadow, N.Y.) headlined the Scarlet and Gold with five goals. Senior goalkeeper Matthew Pedrick (New Milford, N.J.) did his best to douse the Firebirds' rallying attempts with 15 saves.


 
Chestnut Hill College (2-4) captured an early 2-0 lead and stayed one step ahead of the University of the District of Columbia (7-2) in a crucial first quarter, 5-2. A slower second quarter included Howell's third goal (6-3, 6:29 2QTR) in between a pair of Firebird tallies the left the Griffins with a 6-4 halftime lead. The offenses controlled the third quarter as the Scarlet and Gold bookended a pair of Firebird goals (12:37, 12:03, 3QTR) with two, two-goal runs of their own doubling the spread, 10-6, by 6:21. But, UDC used a man-down goal to at 5:37 (10-7) to start a 5-3 run that ended the frame with Chestnut Hill College up just two tallies, 13-11 (0:03), once more. Fortunately, the Griffins found their stride in the fourth frame, using five consecutive scores to snare a 19-12 edge before the 19-13 final.
 
Sophomore attack Alan Singleton (Montreal, Canada) led the UDC with six goals and a ground ball, while senior midfielder LaRon Hinton (Woodbridge, Va.) and junior attack Zach Hart (Springfield, Va.) supported his effort with three goals apiece. Hinton added nine ground balls, helping senior midfielder Teilen Celentano (Ottawa, Ontario) corral his superior  performance on the face off (20-of-33, .606). Celentano totaled two assists and 11 ground balls. In goal, junior Nikolas Lund-Murray (New Westminster, B.C) made 11 saves.
 
On top of his five goals, Howell also collected two ground balls and caused a turnover. Senior attack Dylan Klusaritz (Slatington, Pa.) led Chestnut Hill College with six points (3 goals, 3 assists). Junior midfielder Nicholas Webber (Westwood, Mass.) netted all three shot attempts he took, while sophomore attack Scott Wilden (Wexford, Pa.) and junior long stick midfielder John Bennett (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) tallied two goals apiece. Junior defenseman Matthew Anderson (Yardley, Pa.) helped Pedrick in the Griffin backfield with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
The Chestnut Hill College men's lacrosse team returns to Victory Field #1 on Thursday, March 29, when they host the New York Institute of Technology in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
