Box Score 2 Tampa, Fla. - (3/7/2018) – Chestnut Hill College fell on the wrong side of two pitchers' duels today, Wednesday, March 7, as freshman
Julianna Barry (Northridge, Calif.) held the University of Tampa scoreless in the first seven innings of a 10-inning, 1-0 loss before sophomore
Samantha Vogel (Beachwood, N.J.) and junior
Hunter Irvin (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) teamed for six strong innings in a 2-0 Spartan win. Five different Griffins recorded a hit in the opener and junior third baseman
Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) was the only one of five Griffin hitters to record more than one hit in game two.
Both Chestnut Hill College (0-6) and the University of Tampa (14-9) had plenty of chances to score in regulation, but it was not until extra innings that the home team was able to complete a circuit. The Spartans went to their bullpen first, bringing in a fresh arm after a lead-off double to right field from freshman right fielder
Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.). An error allowed her to reach third base, but she was unable to reach home with a pair of strikeouts and a foul fly to left field brining the at-bat to a fruitless end. In the bottom of the 10
th inning, a lead-off single, a sacrifice, and a double to left center allowed the Spartans to walk-off, 1-0.
Vogel permitted the Spartans a run in the second and third innings of game two and handed the ball to Irvin for four frames of one-hit softball. Unfortunately, the Scarlet and God offense was not able to come through, stranding runners in scoring position in the fifth and seventh innings of a 2-0 final. Sophomore designated player
Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.), junior first baseman
Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.), sophomore second baseman
Giovanna Lorine (Berwyn, Pa.), senior left fielder
Jessica Pulis (Baldwin, N.Y.), and junior shortstop
Nichole Eberhard (Philadelphia, Pa.) each recorded a single.
The Chestnut Hill College softball will make up one of their previously scheduled contests with Webber International University as they visit the Warriors for a 3:30 p.m. game on Thursday, March 8.
