Chestnut Hill College Bats Connect, But Bears Claw to Comeback Wins

Brielle Riotte
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/14/2018) – Chestnut Hill College found their swing and led Bloomfield College in both ends of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. But the Bears bats were on point as well, mounting comebacks in a 12-7, 10-inning opener and a 14-8 game two conclusion. Junior first baseman Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.) and junior catcher Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.) both went 2-for-4 with three runs-batted-in (RBI) in game one; the former stayed hot in game two, going 3-for-3 with three more RBI.

Chestnut Hill College (1-21, 1-14) scored six times in their first two at-bats of the twin bill, grabbing an early 6-1 lead over Bloomfield College (9-15, 9-9). Over the course of the next five innings, the Bears chipped away at the Griffin lead, reducing the deficit to 6-2 in the third inning and 6-4 in the sixth inning, before tying the contest in the seventh, 6-6. In the extra frames, both sides netted a run in the ninth, 7-7, where a one-out, Sauer single to right field scored sophomore designate player Cailey Stevenson (Burbank, Calif.) to keep the contest going. But in the 10th, Bloomfield College claimed victory with five runs on five hits and an error, 12-7.

Sophomore shortstop Alessandra Messina (Ambler, Pa.) (2-for-4) and junior left fielder Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) (2-for-3) joined Sauer and Riotte with two hits apiece. Magee plated the first Griffin run of the affair with her first-inning single to right field.

In game two, the Griffins and Bears were neck-and-neck for the first four frames, 5-5. Chestnut Hill College briefly took the lead in the third inning, where a leadoff walk to Sauer, a Riotte single to left field, and a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman right fielder Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) scored the first of two Griffin runs. The second scored moments later, after a wild pitch and a ground out to short from junior first baseman Kaya Swanek (Pittston, Pa.). Unfortunately, Bloomfield College outscored the Griffins 9-3 in the final three frames, 14-8. Swanek (3-for-4) joined Riotte with three hits. Sophomore second baseman Giovanna Lorine (Berwyn, Pa.) (2-for-4) and junior centerfielder Marissa Maioran (Rockaway, N.J.) (2-for-3) joined the Griffins' offensive outburst with two hits apiece.

The Chestnut Hill College softball team continues their CACC schedule on Tuesday, April 17, when they visit the University of the Sciences (USciences) for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
