Women's Basketball Team Drops Regular Season Opener to Molloy

Box Score The Chestnut Hill women's Basketball team played their first game that counted in over 600 days Saturday afternoon as they took on Molloy College at the ECC/CACC Challenge hosted by Queens College in Flushing, New York.  The Griffins fell behind early and struggled to keep pace with the Lions as they lost their season opener 66-51.

Cassie Sebold (4-5 FG) led the Griffins with 11 points and five assists.  Leah Miller (5-9 FG) added ten points and Emily Chmiel (4-8 FG, 2-2 FT) in her collegiate debut also knocked down ten points while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Chmiel also had a team high three blocks.

Two baskets from Miller and another from Sebold staked the Griffins to an early 6-2 lead in the opening minutes of play.  Molloy countered with a 13-0 run, taking advantage of five Chestnut Hill turnovers to take a 15-6 lead late in the quarter.  A basket by Bri Hewlett (7 points) broke the run but the Lions added a three-point bucket to lead 18-8 heading into the second quarter.

Kaitlyn Carter opened the scoring in the second quarter and three-pointer from Sebold closed the deficit to five 18-13.  Molloy then ran off eight straight points to boost their lead back to double digits 26-13.  Chestnut Hill would close within nine 29-20 but four straight points by the Lions made the score 44-20 at halftime.

Chestnut Hill had their best shooting quarter in the third period, connecting on eight of 12 shots as they whittled the Molloy lead back down to single digits 49-40.  Sebold, Chmiel and Miller provided the bulk of the offense in the quarter making six of six shots from the field.

Sebold picked up her fifth foul early in the fourth quarter as Molloy stretched their lead back to double figures, opening with an 11-2 run to lead 60-42 midway through the final stanza. Without Sebold on the floor and later Miller who also fouled out,  the Griffin offense struggled to cut into the lead and they would come no closer than 15 points the rest of the game.

For the game the Griffins shot 38.2% from the field (21-55) while Molloy shot 43.4% (23-53).  The Lions outscored the Griffins 15-5 on the free throw line and had a slight 34-33 rebounding advantage.

The Chestnut Hill Women's Basketball Team will be back in action on Sunday when they face host Queens College at 2:00 p.m.
