Last Time Out for Goldey-Beacom
Goldey-Beacom wasted a 34-point effort from sophomoreÂ
Nazim Derry and left Orangeburg, NY with a crushing 69-62 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at 21st-ranked Dominican (NY).
Goldey-Beacom in the first half held Dominican to two stretches of over three minutes without a point. The Chargers shot just 28 percent (8-of-29) from the floor, 4-of-17 from 3-point range and committed 10 turnovers.
Meanwhile, Derry was the Lightning's focal point on offense with 14 points in helping his side own a 28-22 halftime cushion.
Goldey-Beacom kept things going in the second half, using a 15-6 run in just under 4 1/2 minutes to gain a 50-35 margin with 11:35 remaining. Derry continued his torrid display with 10 points in that run to help the Lightning shoot 6-of-9 from the floor.
But the Chargers would not be denied in ending the contest on a 34-12 run, snapping the Lightning's five-game winning streak.
Derry drilled a 3-pointer with 5:33 remaining for a 59-51 GBC lead. After Joseph Merrill and Jalen Burgess each canned triples for Dominican, juniorÂ
Juran Ligonde hit a layup with 3:36 left for a 61-57 margin.
Wahaad Johnson then became the star for Chargers after going scoreless up until this point. He nailed a jumper with 3:15 to play for a two-point contest and then canned the go-ahead 3-pointer from the right corner with two minutes left for a 62-61 Dominican lead.
A free throw from sophomoreÂ
Mekhi Collins with 96 seconds wiped out Dominican's first lead of the game for a 62-62 tie. However, Brandt Roundtree's layup with 1:08 left gave the home side the lead for good.
Burgess converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 28 seconds remaining before Johnson hit two free throws and the last of his seven points with 11 seconds to go for the final.
