PREVIEW: Griffins Face Lightning in a CACC South Division Clash

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball will again be on the road this Wednesday as they seek their 12th straight win, playing at Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware.

The Series
Wednesday's contest between Goldey-Beacom College and Chestnut Hill College will be the 28th meeting between the two teams.  The series dates back to the 2007-08 season and the Lightning hold a 17-10 lead in the all-time series.  Goldey-Beacom also has won 11 of the 13 games played at the Jones Center.   The Griffins won the last meeting in Delaware 64-54 on February 18, 2020 and have won four in a row overall. 

Conference Action
Chestnut Hill is off to its best start in conference play since becoming a member of the CACC in 2007-08, with a 10-0 conference record and are sitting alone in first place in the CACC South Division.  The Griffins have held conference opponents to just 53.3 points per game en route to their 10-0 CACC record.  Goldey-Beacom is 2-8 in CACC games and sits in sixth place in the CACC south division Standings.
 
Griffins Remain #5 in Latest D2SIDA East Region Poll
Philadelphia, Pa. - The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team, following their 3-0 week last week remain in the #5 spot in the latest Division 2 Sports Information Directors Association (D2SIDA) East Region poll, released Monday afternoon.  The poll is voted on by representatives of each of the three conference that make up the East Region:  The Central Atlantic Collegiate conference, The Northeast-10 conference and the East Coast Conference.

In this, the first season that the Griffins' women's basketball program has been ranked, this week's ranking is their highest.  Chestnut Hill was ranked at #8 last week.   This marks the sixth consecutive week that the Chestnut Hill Women's Basketball team has either been ranked or has received votes in the poll.

About the Griffins
The Griffins enter Wednesday's game with a 17-3 overall record and a 10-0 CACC record following their 82-64 win  68-62 win over Nyack on Sunday, extending their winning streak to a program best 11 games.  Chestnut Hill's 17-3 overall and 10-0 conference record is their best record at this point of the season since joining the NCAA in 1996.
 
Among the Griffins' active players, Emily Chmiel  leads the team with eight double-doubles (leads CACC) and is averaging 12.2 points per game. Chmiel leads the CACC in total blocks (35) and total rebounds (168) and ranks among the conference top eight in nine additional statistical categories, including blocks/game (2nd, 1.8), free throws made (4th, 56) and rebounds/game (8th, 8.4).   Chmiel is third on the team with 18 steals and has appeared in all 20 games.  Emily earned Player, Rookie and Defensive Player of the Week honors for her performance during the week ending January 23, 2022 and now has earned CACC Rookie of the Week four times and CACC Defensive Player of the Week three.
 
Point guard Cassie Sebold  is also averaging double figures, scoring 10.9 points per game.  She leads the team with 100 assists (2nd in CACC, 11th in NCAA) and is tied for the team lead with 23 steals.  Sebold is also second on the team with 21 three-point field goals made on the season, while appearing in all but two games this season.  Cassie is shooting 84.0% from the free throw line (3rd best mark in the CACC)


Bri Hewlett moved into a starting role on 12/8 and has scored in double figures in all but two of her starts.  Hewlett is averaging 7.9 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game.  She had a career night against holy Family last week, recording 23 points (8 FG, 4 3pt. FG) and 12 rebounds to lead the Griffins.  She followed that with another double-double against Nyack college  12 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.
 
Lauren Crim  leads the team with 28 three-point field goals and is averaging 6.8 points per game.  Crim is also shooting 81.3% from the free throw line which would rank among the top five in the CACC but for lack of minimum free throws made.  
 
Lindsey Lane has started all 20 games and is shooting 44.4% from the field while averaging 5.3 points per game.  Lane has made a season-high six field goals against Georgian Court and Felician and had a career-high 15 points vs. Felician.   Kaitlyn Carter has also appeared in all 20 games, starting four.  She is tied for the team lead with 23 steals and is averaging 4.5 points/game.   Cater had a career-high 16 points in the Griffins' win over Jefferson on Jan. 13 and has been a stalwart on defense effectively shutting down one of the top offensive players on the opposing team in each of the last nine games.  Her efforts earned her CACC Defensive player of the Week for the week ending January 16.
 
Last Time Out
Jersey City, N.J.. Six players reached double figures as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team won their 11th straight game, defeating Nyack college 82-64 Sunday night at the John J. Moore Athletics and fitness Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The Griffins improve to 17-3 overall and 10-0 in Central Atlantic collegiate Conference games,  Nyack falls to 5-7 overall and 4-3 in league play.

Cassie Sebold  (Willow Grove, Pa.) led the Griffins with 15 points while Kaitlyn Carter (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 14.  Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) recorded her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Lindsey Lane (Havertown, Pa.) narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.  Emily Chmiel (Doylestown, Pa.) came off the bench to score 11 points and grab 13 rebounds for her league leading eighth double-double while playing just 17 minutes. Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points.  Abbey Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.) added eight points and six rebounds while Sebold and Carter led the team with five assists apiece.

The Griffins pulled down a season-best 62 rebounds including 21 on the offensive glass, leading to a 23-3 advantage in the second chance points category.
Crim and Sebold gave the Griffins an early lead with back-to-back three-balls in the opening minutes of play.  Nyack scored six straight after the Crim basket to retake the lead and then used an 8-2 run to lead by six 16-10 before the Griffins closed out the quarter with a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to two 18-16.

The Griffins took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors 23-13 to lead by eight at the half, 39-31.  The third quarter saw the Griffins turn on the offense, outscoring their hosts 22-9 to take a 61-40 lead heading into the final quarter.  The Warriors kept the game within striking distance in the first five minutes and tailed 47-40 with 4:44 left when Chestnut Hill exploded with a 14-0 run, getting six points from Chmiel, and four points apiece from Hewlett and Carter.  All but one of the seven baskets was a layup.

Lane's layup to open the scoring in the fourth quarter gave the Griffins their biggest lead of the game at 63-40.  Nyack slowly began to chip away at the lead, using a 20-9 spurt over the next 6:06 to close within 12, 72-60 with just 2:44 left in the game.  Carter added a three-ball and the Griffins went 7-for-8 from the free throw line to close out the game with a 10-4 surge for the 18-point win.
 
Hewlett Named to the CACC Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll
Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball player Bri Hewlett has been named the the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Weekly honor Roll for her performance in the Griffins three games last week.

This week's honor marks the second time this season that Hewlett has been recognized for her performance on the court, having been named to the CACC women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll on January 16, 2022.

Hewlett led the Griffins to another perfect week (3-0) and recorded back-to-back double-doubles in the Griffins two CACC wins (Holy Family and Nyack)... Against Holy Family, she had a career high 23 points (8-15 FG, 4-8 3FG) while grabbing 12 rebounds.  On Sunday at Nyack, Hewlett scored 12 points while grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds.  Opening the week in the Griffins non-conference win over Staten Island, the senior forward had 13 points in just 19 minutes of action while shooting 50% from field...Since moving into a starting role, Bri has scored in double figures in ten of the last 11 games.

For the week, Hewlett averaged 16.0 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game while also recording two assists, two steals and a block in the Griffins three games.  The senior forward shot 48.6% (17-35) from the field, 33.3% from three point range (5-15) and made nine of ten free throws (90%).

Moving up the Ranks
In the Griffins' game against the Holy Family on Wednesday, Cassie Sebold moved into 4th place on the Griffins all-time scoring list, with 1,133 points passing Jennifer Banks who scored 1,126 from 2000-2004 (NCAA DIII era).  After Sunday's game at Nyack, Sebold now needs 27 more points to pass Beth Ann Castone (1,174 pts.) and move into third place on the Griffins' all-time list.  In addition, Sebold became the second player in program history to record 400 career assists last week and now has 420 for her career.  (Mary Trossi is the Griffins' all-time leader with 477)

Scouting the Lightning
Goldey-Beacom enters Wednesday's game with a 7-11 overall mark and a 2-8 record in league play.  The Lightning have lost five of their last six games with their only win coming against Wilmington University on January 18. GBC's only other conference win was a 90-78 triumph over Gerogian court University on December 1sty of last year to open CACC play.
Briana Seltzer continues to lead the Lightning, averaging 15.1 points per game .  She leads the team with 36 three point baskets and 50 assists.  Alexis Harrison is shooting 59.1% from the field and is averaging 14.4 points per game.  She is the team leader in blocks with 19 and has shot more than twice as many free throws (99) as Seltzer (48) who is second on the team in attempts.  However she is shooting just 45.5% from the free throw line. She also leads the team in rebounding, averaging 6.7 per game and is second on the team with 25 steals.
Lexi Welkert leads the team with 28 steals.  Mickey Williams, who has started just three games and played in 16 of the 18 is the team's third leading scorer, averaging 8.8 points per game.
 
Last Time Out for Goldey-Beacom
Goldey-Beacom's usually tough defense unfortunately could not contain a hot shooting squad in Dominican (NY) and was handed an 82-61 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss in Orangeburg, NY.

Dominican in the opening half established momentum by shooting 44 percent (6-of-18) from the floor and forcing 15 turnovers in gaining a 39-32 lead.  Sophomore Briana Seltzer (Reading, PA) paced Goldey-Beacom with 12 points and junior Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) added eight.

The Chargers then took control in the third quarter with a 24-16 edge on the scoreboard for a 63-48 lead.  Khay'la Latimer scored 11 points and Olivia Levy added six for Dominican, which shot 58 percent (7-of-12) from the floor in that time with four 3-pointers.

Goldey-Beacom entering today had held opponents to under a .400 field goal percentage in nine contests.

Harrison scored 14 points, Seltzer netted 12 and junior Lexi Weikert (Harrisburg, PA) equaled her season best with 10 points for the Lightning (7-11, 2-8 CACC).
