PREVIEW: Griffins Look to Earn a Victory over Rams on the Road

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team travels down the road to take on nearby Jefferson University on Tuesday in a battle of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference  South Division powerhouses.

The Series
Tuesday's contest will be the 28th meeting and second this season between Jefferson and Chestnut Hill.  The Griffins won the first contest 70-61 at Sorgenti Arena.  Chestnut Hill won the last time the two teams played at the Gallagher Center but the Griffins are just 2-10 lifetime at Jefferson's home arena. 

Conference Action

Chestnut Hill currently sits in first place in the CACC South Division with an 13-1 conference record following an overtime loss at Dominican College and a win at Caldwell last week. They are a game ahead of second place USciences and two games ahead of third place Jefferson with four more conference games to play.   The Griffins became the first team in the CACC to clinch a playoff berth with their win over Bloomfield on Saturday, February 5.  Jefferson has an 11-3 conference record and sits in third place in the CACC south Division, a game behind USciences and two games behind the griffins
   
Griffins Remain #5 in Latest D2SIDA East Region Poll
Philadelphia, Pa. - The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team, following their 1-1 week last week remain in the #5 spot, albeit tied,  for the fourth consecutive week in the latest Division 2 Sports Information Directors Association (D2SIDA) East Region poll, released Monday afternoon.  The poll is voted on by representatives of each of the three conference that make up the East Region:  The Central Atlantic Collegiate conference, The Northeast-10 conference and the East Coast Conference.  This week's poll is the final one released by D2SIDA as the NCAA Regional Rankings come out on Wednesday.

This week's ranking marks the eighth consecutive week that the Chestnut Hill Women's Basketball team has either been ranked or has received votes in the poll.

About the Griffins
The Griffins enter Tuesday's game with an 20-4 overall record and an 13-1 CACC record following their 72-60 win at Caldwell University. Chestnut Hill's 20-4 overall  record is the most wins ever in a single season in program history.
 
Among the Griffins' active players, Emily Chmiel  leads the team with ten double-doubles (2nd in CACC) and is averaging 12.0 points per game. Chmiel leads the CACC in total blocks (40) and is 2nd in total rebounds (201) while ranking among the conference top eight in eight additional statistical categories, including blocks/game (3rd, 1.7), free throws made (8th, 62), blocks/game (4th, 1.7) and rebounds/game (5th, 8.4).   Chmiel is third on the team with 20 steals.  Emily earned CACC Rookie of the Week honors for her performance during the week ending 2/6 and now has earned CACC Rookie of the Week honors five times while also being named CACC Defensive Player of the Week three and CACC player of the Week once
 
Point guard Cassie Sebold  is also averaging double figures, scoring 11.9 points per game.  She leads the team with 124 assists (2nd in CACC, 10th in NCAA) and leads the team with 25 steals.  Sebold is also second on the team with 31 three-point field goals made on the season, while appearing in all but two games this season.  Cassie is shooting 84.3% from the free throw line (2nd best mark in the CACC) and has two double doubles on the season.


Bri Hewlett moved into a starting role on 12/8 and has scored in double figures in ten of the Griffins last 11 games.  Hewlett is averaging 8.6 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game.  She had a career night against Holy Family on 1/26, recording 23 points (8 FG, 4 3pt. FG) and 12 rebounds to lead the Griffins.  She followed that with another double-double against Nyack College 12 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.  She has earned CACC Weekly honor roll accolades three times this season, most recently on Feb. 14.  Hewlett notched her fourth double-double of the season on Saturday against Caldwell with 15 points and ten rebounds.
 
Lauren Crim  leads the team with 41 three-point field goals and has made 13 three-point goals in the Griffins last four games and has made a three-pointer in each of the Griffins last six games. She is averaging  8.0 points per game.  Crim is also shooting 81.4% from the free throw line and ranks among the top five in the CACC in assist/turnover ratio with a mark of 1.7
 
Lindsey Lane has started all 24 games and is shooting 43.7% from the field while averaging 5.8 points per game.  Lane has made a season-high six field goals against Georgian Court and Felician and had a career-high 15 points vs. Felician.  Abbey Spratt has also started all 24 games and has been the backcourt defensive stalwart usually guarding one of the opponent's better players. Spratt is third on the team with 40 assists.
 
Kaitlyn Carter has also appeared in all 24 games, starting four.  She is second on the team with 24 steals and 42 assists and is averaging 3.7 points/game.   Carter had a career-high 16 points in the Griffins' win over Jefferson on Jan. 13 and has also been a stalwart on defense effectively shutting down a top offensive player on the opposing team in each of the last ten games.  Her efforts earned her CACC Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending January 16 when she held the league's leading scorer without a basket in CHC's win at Georgian Court.
 
Last Time Out
Caldwell, N.J. -  The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team placed four players in double figures with a solid second and third quarter effort to defeat Caldwell University 72-60 and set the program record with their 20th win of the season.

The win was also their first time the Griffins defeated the Cougars on their home court, having gone 0-7 in their previous attempts to do so.  Chestnut Hill improves to 20-4 overall, the first program in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) to win 20 games this season.  The Griffins also improve to  13-1 in CACC games.   Caldwell falls to 12-11 overall and 7-6 in league play.

Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) led the Griffins with 18 points (4-9 3FG) while Emily Chmiel (Doylestown, Pa.) added 17 points (8-13 FG) and Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) 15 (6-10 FG).  Chmiel and Hewlett also recorded double-doubles with Chmiel grabbing 11 rebounds and Hewlett ten.  Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) rounded out the double figure scorers with 14 points (4-8 FG,3-7 3FG). Chmiel led the team with five assists while Hewlett added four.

The Cougars scored the first four points of the game before Sebold got the Griffins on the board with a three-point field goal.  After another Cougar bucket, Sebold drove for a layup to cut the score to 6-5.  The Cougars finished the quarter with a 10-4 run and held a 16-9 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Griffins used a 9-0 run to open the second quarter and take an 18-16 lead before Caldwell broke the run and retook the lead 19-18 with a three-point basket.  Hewlett followed with a layup and after a defensive stop Crim sank a three-pointer to give the Griffins a four point lead, 23-19 with just under six minutes left.  The Cougars rallied with an 9-4 run to take a one point lead, 28-27 only to have the Griffins again get two straight scores, a layup from Hewlett and a three-pointer from Sebold to lead 32-28 with 1:32 left.  Chmiel added a putback as time was expiring to keep the lead at four 34-30  heading into the locker room at halftime. Chmiel had the hot hand in the quarter scoring nine points and grabbing eight rebounds.

The Cougars opened the quarter with a 5-3 mini run to close within two 37-35 before the Griffins used a 16-9 run to expand the lead to double digits 53-41 with 2:05 left in the third quarter. Four different players scored over the course of the run with Crim's traditional three-point play capping the effort. Neither team scored the rest of the quarter and the Griffins held a 12-point advantage heading into the final period.

Chestnut Hill opened the fourth quarter with a 10-3 run to lead 63-44 with 6:13 left.    Hewlett had five of the ten points including a three-point basket to cap the run. A Sebold three shortly thereafter gave the Griffins their biggest lead at 66-46.  Caldwell came back with a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 13, 68-58 with 2:32 left prompting a Griffins timeout.  Two free throws by CU's Paula Dits  closed the gap to eight 68-60 with 2:00 minutes left before Chmiel 's layup broke the run with 1:41 left.  The Griffins added two more baskets to round out the scoring.
 
Hewlett Named to the CACC Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll
Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball player Bri Hewlett has been named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll for her performance in last week's games.

This marks the third time that Hewlett has been recognized by the conference having been named to the weekly honor roll twice previously (February 1 and January 16)

Hewlett recorded double-doubles in both games this week for the Griffins as the team went 1-1 for the week.  The senior forward averaged 14.5 points and 13.0 rebounds along with 2.5 assists per game.

Opening the week at Dominican College Hewlett scored 14 points while tying her career high with 16 rebounds.   She shot 42.9% (6-14) from the field and added one assist as the Griffins fell in overtime 79-70.

Hewlett followed up with a 15-point ten rebound effort against Caldwell as the Griffins bounced back to win their program record 20th game, 72-60 over the Cougars.  Hewlett shot 60% (6-10) from the field while also dishing out four assists and recording three steals.

For the week, Hewlett scored 29 points and grabbed 26 rebounds (22 defensive) while shooting 50%(12-24) from the field.  She also recorded a total of five assists and three steals.

Moving up the Ranks
Lauren Crim made three three-point field goals on Wednesday night to move into third place on the Griffins' all-time list with 182, passing Vicky Tumasz (180 , 2016-18)…Crim also moved into a tie with Jessica Pruitti (2007-11) for 13th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 865 points…Cassie Sebold  became just the third Griffins women's basketball player to score 1,200 or more points with her 18-point effort vs. Caldwell.  With 1,214 points, Sebold now needs 64 more points to pass Ruairi Sullivan (1,277 pts.) to move into second place on the Griffins' all-time list.

Scouting the Rams
Jefferson is third in the CACC South with an 11-3 conference record and a 19-5 record overall.  The team's five starters have produced 75% of the Rams offense this season.

Cassie Murphy leads the team, averaging 15.0 points per game.  The freshman power forward is shooting 55.4% from the field and is third on the team averaging 5.5 rebounds.  Haley Meinel has started all 24 games and is averaging 14.6 points per game  and leads the team with 19 blocks and 69 steals.

Morgan Robinson leads the CACC in asssits and ranks among the Division II national leaders, with 160 on the season.  Robinson is averaging 8.7 points per game while shooting 48.8% from the field.  She is second on the team averaging 6.7 rebounds per game.

Maeve McCann is second on the team with 26 three-point baskets  and 63 assists.  McCann is averaging 7.4 points per game.  Sam Yencha isd the team's leading rebounder, pulling down an average of 7.0 per game.  Yencha is averaging 6.3 points per game.

Emily Keehfuss leads the team in three-point field goals with 32 and has been a key contributor off the bench for the Rams.

Last Time Out for Jefferson
RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Thomas Jefferson University women's basketball team (19-5, 11-3 CACC) dominated its CACC contest at Felician on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Golden Falcons by a 76-43 score to bring its win streak to eight games.

Haley Meinel led the Rams with a career-high  29 points on 12-of-14 shooting (3-5 3PT), 7 rebounds, 6 steals, 2 assists.  Cassie Murphy added 18 points on 9-of-15 shooting, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 1 assist

The Rams trailed 5-4 midway through the first quarter but took over with an 11-2 run. Haley Meinel posted seven points to lead the charge. The score was 17-11 in favor of Jefferson at the end of the first.
 
Felician was within seven (27-20) with 6:12 to go in the second. The Rams created more separation with nine straight points. Four different players contributed to the run. The Golden Falcons closed the half with a three and Jefferson had a 36-23 advantage at the break.
 
The Rams continued to control the contest in the third, outscoring Felician 21-9 in the period. Jefferson closed the quarter with an 11-1 surge to take a 25-point cushion (57-32) into the fourth. The Rams won the fourth by a 19-11 count.
